Wowie, zowie...check out this beautiful Alexander Girard Sofa, available for only one year.
Girard is the highest dolla...
Girard is the highest dollar man going at all the auctions bringing record breaking amounts, his stuff was so cool but so poorly received my the public in 1967,
Herman miller cut the sofa after a year, cause of poor sales and low volume,
Most of Girards work ended up at the Baniff call center in Dallas and the executive offices
I was lucky enough to get one of the marble coffee tables that was in Harding Lawrences office the CEO of Braniff and the man who hired Girard, the table was designed by Charles Eames and Alexander Girard, TOGETHER
The Guys who i bought the table from handled the liquidation of the Braniff call center 25 years ago and they said the stuff that was in that center was un real;
If someone would have bought the sofas and chairs, and tables and put them away for 25 years they would have done real well, as his two tone stuff is out of this world. all of that furniture was designed by Alexande Girard from the fabric to the sofas and chairs,
Only 1 year was not long enough to develop this line
After this stuff was designed for the giant Braniff account, Herman Miller introduced this beautiful line for the retail market in 1967 and they only kept it in production for a year. (It was created in 1965 for the Braniff account and introduced for retail in 1967 and discontinued in 1968.)
There must've been some reason why Herman Miller didn't give it more time to develop; if they went solely by sales, then the reintroduction of the Nelson Swag(ged) leg group last year would've bit the dust by now, because word is that it has been a sales disappointment.
I'm thinking that there was some other issue that caused the Girard group is disappear so soon.
MOST pieces of this beautiful furniture that turns up have Braniff labels.
My late friend had scored a pair of sofas (like the one above in brown with checked fabric cushions), a pair of marbled top side tables and one marching ottoman (see below, they were donated to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts). The foam was pertified, but the fabric was in good condition. The sofa and chair were very low to the ground.
girard..
from what I understand the sofa line was the most expensive of any of the HM furniture to produce and its highly customizable format was not recieved well by the public. I don't think people knew what do do when presented with so many options - you could basically make it a million different patterns/textiles/colors. I was also told it is not the most comfortable sofa either but I have to say it is more gorgeous than the Compact or Eames Sofa as well as Nelson's own sofas.
here it is azure chicken... ...
here it is azure chicken...
I think it is so cool mostly cause of the history of where it has been
in Harding Lawrances office the CEO of Braniff the guy who gave the commissions to Alexander
Girard I think it is cool that this was a Eames Girard collaboration cause when this table was placed in Lawrence's office Girard had not designed all of his cool furniture, The table has the Lafonda base that makes it Eames, design for the Lafonda Del Sol and the marble top, for the coffee table top, a true 60s Icon,
I once had a small...
I once had a small collection of neck ties made by Girard for Herman Miller given to me by my father who was then the CEO of a company in the midwest, a gift from Girard himself. At the time, they just weren't my style...so I foolishly donated them to charity. I recall Girard also designing a large sculptural mural for fathers company headquarters (1967?)that at the time I thought was strange, at best. Thankfully now I appreciate the everything Girard has created. Sorting through my gin soaked brain, I also recall Mr. Girard having an odd brother that often traveled with him on various commissions, etc. As a child I wasn't allowed to partake in my parents social gatherings...but I fondly remember the brother (Tonsi?) as being quite humorous. Snag the sofa Barry...It's very cool.
What shall I upholster my Girard chairs in?
Hi guys,I've got a pair of Girard chairs from Braniff Airline (still with the Braniff property lables on). I can't decide what to upholster them in though. Currently they're purple backs and a dirty yellow on the seat area. I was thinking a really bright raspberry colour for the seat and black and white checker for the backs. Any suggestions would be really appreciated or images you have of Girard chairs. Cheer Paul
See my posting on the other thread
Unless the upholstery is damaged, redoing them is insane since the value of a Girard chair is about 50% the original upholstery color scheme.
But since Case mentioned the condition issues, I'd say research the original color schemes and reproduce the one you like the most.
