Today I saw an old variation on an Eames 670 lounger and 671 ottoman. It stickers read Designed by George Wauyerhauser (or something approximating that) of Lawrence, Massachussetts. Has anyone ever heard about this fellow and about his chairs. The Chair was like the Eames, but the arm rests were not integrated into the wood shell. Instead they rose up slightly on metal supports that were then topped with leather. It had a four point stand like the early Eames chairs, but a seemingly cheaper mechanism. And the connector strips between the lower back and the upper back shells were flatter and wider than on an Eames. Also the ottoman was about two thirds the size of my own Eames ottoman. There was something a bit honorable about this take on an Eames chair. It was varied significantly enought that it could not be taken for a copy, or a counterfeit. It was one guys slightly varied take on the Eames' design. Just wondered if anyone had heard of these chairs and could tell me anything about old George.
plycraft
it is George Mulhauser for plycraft i have had many of those chairs they are the exactly like Selig both companies were from Lawrance mass and both chairs are made the same
other than the arms .... selig had straight arms the plycraft had curved similar to a Herman miller Plycraft had litigation with Herman Miller in the early 60's
Selig entred the U.S. Market around 1958 from Denmark and started making the chair in the early 1960's Plycraft had a staff designer by the name of Lou Ebbes (could be a little differnt)but he designed the oversized man chair for plycraft,
Selig and plycraft are forever joined and they are almost one in the same,
with a few minor changes,
