Straylight,
According to my research (10 seconds on google) the table pictured below was designed by George Nelson.
If you agree with me feel free to respond. If you disagree, youre wrong and I challenge you to provide indisputable evidence that it is not. Until then I will proceed to list it on Ebay with an asking price of $2000.
Thanks!
The elephant in the room....
I wonder if anyone would care if George Nelson's name wasn't associated with this rather ordinary patio furniture. Lets face it, not his best work. When big names drive market prices there are always going to be people, and in particular dodgy dealers, pushing for attributions in order to charge punters big bucks.
I have been involved in similar discussions in relation to the steel rod furniture designed by Clement Meadmore in the 1950's. Dealers were happy to attribute almost anything made of steel rod to Meadmore so that they could get top dollar. After some indepth research, it turned out that Meadmore had done approx 13 designs for the company and then the company continued to make his furniture and new designs in his style for another 15 years. Is it not possible that Arbuck manufactured designs based on Nelson's initial designs? It was pretty common in the 1950's for companies to copy the work of designers.
Sometimes you get a feel for a designers work and you can tell by looking at a piece if the style and materials are right. It's not a perfect science getting a correct identification, but it should never be driven by ego or greed. The rule of thumb should always be 'no clear documentation = no id' and the next step is 'attributed to....' or 'in the style of......'.
If you have no documentation then you can't say it is........ It really is that simple. At some point in time all will be revealed.
