Hello,

I posted on 9/4 regarding a recently purchased Thin Edge cabinetry (dresser/credenza and two side cabinets) set which I am having restored and refinished.

I am wondering if anyone can recommend what type of chemical to use to restore the pieces: lacquer, varnish, tung oil, etc.

Thanks.

if the guy restoring them
doesn't know what the original finish is then your not having the right person refinish them.
My guess is a sprayed laquer?
There are simply ways to test the finish with solvents to see what is on them.
Good luck!

Yes --
these definitley deserve the attention of a qualified finsher. As tempting as it is to add something temporarily to "spruce them up," I would avoid that; it would likely interfere with the correct refinishing later.
The next best thing to leaving them untouched would be a professional refinish, with the intent to return them to their original appearance. Selecting the right sheen is part of this task.

Refinishing
Yes, the intent is to refinish them and I am having a qualified professional refinish them. The question as to what chemical to use was discussed yesterday. I believe that they have an oil finish on them currently, but once they are sanded down, restained and then refinished if we do a low gloss lacquer I am thinking it should be just fine. This is the way I've seen refinished George Nelson Thin Edge pieces in galleries. Any further thoughts? I appreciate it. Thank you.
