George Nelson Slat Bench has nails?  

Question for all of you original George Nelson Slat Bench owners: I have been looking for an original for a while now and am not super familiar with their construction. The ones that I have come across have all seemed to have nails securing the slats across the one or two cross members while there are still dowels on the end pieces. I'd be interested in knowing if this is the universal way that they were manufactured or if this dates them in one direction or the other on the manufacture continuum? Thanks for any insight you can provide? Below is a link to an example.
