I recently purchased an Omni unit, 8 posts, white shelves with thin white cabinets that collapse, double length wood shelves, 2 thick glass shelves, and thin, and lots of extra hardware; almost 16' in length.
I am thinking this unit is very early because of the construction of the cabinets. It looks very much like the units in that old photo showing the Omni as a kitchen.
I have some photos and will share them.
I have read that there are 3 generations of the Omni and would love to know the difference between the various generations and more about the evolution of Omni. Thanks in advance, Rick

Photos would help, but the easiest way to tell if your Omni is early is the pole design. To my knowledge there are three pole designs, the square design with a channel on all four sides (the cross-section of this design, an X with arrows is the Omni logo) is the first.
There is also a pole design that is more rectangular with channels on the front and back while the sides are smooth. There is another pole design which is a deeper rectangular and is almost identical to CSS. In fact, I think some of the Omni and CSS parts are interchangeable.
The case goods (shelves, cabinets, etc.) vary also but I think they were subcontracted out, and they are not as easy to date. They do have a distinctive pull design.
I have some original Omni literature, but don't have easy access to a scanner, so it might be a while before I'd have the chance to post images.
