This past year I started collecting George Nelson clocks and I currently have nine. Can anyone tell me if the "Pretzel" clock's hands are authentically all-black or if the versions I've seen with the "arrow" hour hand in gray are correct? Auction sites have had both as images and I'm confused!
Thanks!
pretzel clock hands
I have been collecting Nelson clocks for some time too, and to the best of my knowledge, the hands are all black. I believe the only clock that had the grey accent was the Spike clock, #2202. The Pretzel clock# 4775 is listed in the old Howard Miller catalogs as having two variations, A. Birch face, black ornaments, hands and markers. and B. Rosewood face, brass ornaments, hands and markers. I have also seen before a Pretzel clock with white ornaments and hands. This might have been a special order from the factory, it did look to be vintage original and not repainted to me.
Do I understand
correctly that many of your clocks are repros you've done/had done? Wow! Would love to know which ones and if they're available. I have several Vitra and then several I've found online...none vintage. Trying to find a white asterisk now. I've been trying to upload a picture of mine but I can.
I have a few of the Vitra...
I have a few of the Vitra desk clock repros, and a few of the ZooTimers done by some other company. A friend of mine and I made about 10 or so reproductions of some of the vintage clocks I have and of at least one clock I don't have: the Birdcage clock. That one relied on just pictures and measurements of from the old catalogs. Still it turned out pretty good. I have about 55 different vintage Nelson clocks, that are not reproductions, they are the real thing. Sounds like a lot (and it is) but I have a collector friend who has twice the amount that I do. The last 9 pictures on my Photobucket page are reproductions my friend and I did over the years. Most we did before Vitra, but we didn't intend to try and compete with them. We did them mostly for fun and only sold a few, some I gave to friends.

Where did you find all those Original George Nelson Clocks?
In response to Ken's comment "I have about 55 different vintage Nelson clocks, that are not reproductions, they are the real thing. Sounds like a lot (and it is) but I have a collector friend who has twice the amount that I do."
Wow. Where did you find all of those? Are any for sale?
Nice arrangement Darrelbear
but the more you get the harder it becomes. Here are a few of the last couple Howard Miller items I hung on my walls. A rare Nelson wall vanity offered from Howard Miller Accessories, 1964. Opens to reveal lights, mirror and storage. And I finally hung up my latest vintage Nelson clock, # 2243 from '57. It works but I don't run it, the chimes were keeping up at night. That is a Frederic Weinberg clock on the left.
