Am I the only one here that thinks George Nakashima's furniture is repugnant? Come on speak up; there must be others who realise the emperor is wearing no clothes. What about you KOEN, what do you think about this awful stuff??

i think i was the one who started the other thread Stephen ... so maybe you should take a time out and read what it says.
His stuff is like a fine bottle of Scotch some like it some don't...
some have to acquire a taste for it and that is what Nakashimas work is like.
I would never use the word sucks and for a fine writer like your self who writes for a Newspaper in Australia i would image that you would have a better command of the Queens English.
Nakashimas work does not go in the catatgory with mid century modern furniture or designer, it must be considered fine art.
I have learned something here people, since my original post. I was like Stephen not that impressed with his work but all the good comments and the video that was supplied has changed my opion of this 20 th century Iconic Artist,

Sounds like the arrogant...
Sounds like the arrogant tourist stuck in MOMA because it was on the list of places to see.
Screams 'crap' because he doesn't understand, never will.
Some people make a career of it. 🙂
Perfectly understandable opinion.
Like i understand the tourist.
A shame you are not a comedian. At least it would be entertaining.
But even a good comedian does their homework.

This is really a stupid thread
because even those designs I like the least wouldn't make me say that person "sucks", and I'm not a fan of being politically correct.
Oh, wait a minute, I can safely say that Wal*Mart and our current President both "suck".

Geez...
Uh, that's a bit harsh. I'm not really a fan of most of Nakashima's stuff. It just doesn't suit my tastes, but that doesn't mean it sucks. It just not to my taste. Stuff that sucks is cheaply-made, poorly-designed things. Nakashima's furniture clearly wasn't that. It was very well-made and well-designed fow what it was. Instead of saying his stuff sucks, say something like 'I'm not a fan of his designs.' Saying it sucks based on personal tastes is well...sucky. That's like me saying country music sucks because I'm not a fan of the genre. Yea, I don't like country music, but some of the singers are excellent at their craft. I never say their music sucks. I just say that I'm not a fan.
And there is already a recent thread about Nakashima's designs. Started by LRF, I believe. Why start a new one when there already is one. Just post your stuff there.

One wonders
how you spend your time, when not rudely defaming the life's work of a humble woodworker (& Eagle Scout!) like George Nakashima--- clubbing baby seals?

Saying that shows you have weak grasp of design in general and of NAKASHIMA in particular.Especially telling is the emperors new clothes comment, his work fits neatly into a craft tradition, his work is supremely palpable...

George Nakashima. A native...
George Nakashima. A native of Seattle, Washington. A graduate of MIT in
architecture.
"In my 1929 Ford touring car, with its beautiful heart-shaped hood, I drove
from New York to the West Coast to take leave of my parents. When i told my
mother that i was leaving on a trip around the world, she said nothing.
However, since i was still young and barely started on my career, she hid her
apprehensions with some effort. Although he said little, my father understood
well my frame of mind. He too had wandered for years, around China, before
settling down in the United States. ..."
"...Pearl Harbor broke, and all of us of Japanese decent were put in concentration
camps. My wife and I and our newly born daughter were sent to a camp in Idaho. This I felt at the time was a stupid, insensitive act, one by which my
country could only hurt itself. It was a policy of unthinking racism."...

I like this
Nice Nakashima piece I found on Flickr. If his work will hold their value, than that's what it's worth. As far as the word "suck", I probably wouldn't say that here. Like with any designer, you'll love some and loathe some. For me, Starck's Miss K lamp is brilliant, but some of this other stuff is amiss.

James - now THAT piece I Love
I retract my original statement made in ignorance and at a very early hour of the morning for me (prior to 10am). Plus I hadn't had a cup of tea. I stand corrected James because that piece you posted is gorgeous in a sleek contemporary way. I just happen to hate the table (in a prior post) that looks like a slab of oak on top of a timber frame. It reminded me of the crappy busg furniture that's unfortunately popular in australia. Plus, I happen to have a Masters degree (with merit) in English, so if I think the word 'sucks' is valid, it's valid. But just not on thgis occasion. I was wrong.
And by the way - country music DOES suck. There's an hokey corner in hell for Billy Ray Cyrus and his ilk.

OK
you got me. What is this busg furniture you speak of ?
I wonder if that is really a Nakashima case piece. Would he really have put a stupid little metal knob smack at the edge and smack in the middle (height-wise) of a door, like that ?
Okay, I haven't slept well either. Presentation, including written, counts, especially among artists. People who wish to be taken seriously on aesthetic matters are hypocrites if they dismiss their own sloppiness. . .in my opinion.

all is forgiven with me Stephen, with your choice of words about dear old Mr Nakashima let him rest in peace.
Now get back to stalking...
