Something about those "golden" arms rings a bell--
I once owned a vintage Eames aluminum chair-- cheap thrift shop find that I dismantled, then put back together.
I remember that the arms were discolored, when I found it-- sorta yellowed. After monkeying around with it, I realized that the arms had been coated with a clear plastic film which had apparently discolored, over time. With the help of a razor, it wasn't difficult to peel it all off-- familiar silvery aluminum underneath.
Might this be the case with the chair shown?
As for the wood shaft, I can't say...
P.S. The Herman Miller site states: "Arms, frames, and bases are brightly polished aluminum with clear urethane coating". In the case of MY vintage chair, there was NO coating on the base or side pieces-- just the arms. Once I broke the coating's 'seal' it peeled off easily in large stretchy pieces. Kind of like rubbery (yellowed) shrink wrap.
I wonder if the coating is used because prolonged contact with aluminum is purported to be 'dangerous'(?).
Shiver me timbers...
My alu lounge is early (contract, not universal base) and the coating is clear. not yellowed at all - and certainly not evenly blinged out like the example above.
I'd say this is someone having fun with the chair. Also - LOVE the wooden shaft (no pun). I bet that will last about five minutes until some big guy flops down in the chair - then TIMBERRRRRRR!!!!
I disagree
I think these arms are yella because of the coating-- it looks too similar to what mine were like. Are you suggesting someone intentionally had the arms plated? Seems unlikely.
Did you buy yours from a vintage dealer, LuciferSum? Perhaps the dealer removed the unsightly yellowed film, as I did (?).
As for the shaft-- maybe it's wood veneer over aluminum.
I'd buy it, for $9.99.
While
While the bases are not necessarily coated - the aluminum antlers on the bottom are. The one in the chair isnt - so either the arms are not original to the chair, or they have been plated.
Mine was very vintage - original fabric - and the polycoating is still on the arms and crystal clear. There is a big chip through the coating on one of them.
Here's what the seller says, regarding wood:
"It's a wood veneer over aluminum or steel as the chair does swivel. The chair was purchased from it's original owner who in turn purchased it in the late 50's as a floor model from a furniture convention. It's very unusual as far as the aluminum group series goes. Thank you for your interest. "
