Stripping would be the way to go but then you will end up with the new look you want to avoid, I would suggest some very fine wire wool and bees wax rub softly at first and get harder until you start to see either the colour become similar or you take "the edge" of between the old finish and the bare wood underneath. After buff with an old rag.

Just rub the wire wool in the wax and off you go just remember very fine wire wool and start of lightly.

Can you take the lock out of the door? Or wrap the doors up and take them to a locksmith? Possibly some metal dust jamming up the lock, in combination with dried out grease.

Try oiling the locks for starters... amazing how many people never oil things they own that have mechanisms and wonder why they dont work.

I would assume you put quite a bit of wax on so next time just buff with a rag, you may not need to add more wax. The solution to totaly restore is one that I am never 100% happy with, I like to see wear and history on my furniture and a simply solution like wax is allaways more satisfying.
