I want a fireplace in my bedroom and I can't have one installed. I'm considering a freestanding unit that burns gel. I like the look of it and it will serve my purpose, but someone told me that this kind is one step above an electric fireplace (read: tacky).

I know mine is the only opinion that ultimately matters, but I want to be as informed as possible before I make any decisions.

Tacky or not?

Tacky is not the relevant point...
...the gel part is. Be sure, if you get one of these things, that you select one that burns grain alcohol gel that leaves nothing behind but water vapor or you'll be breathing in some very nasty petroleum goo.

Thanks. If I go with this...
Thanks. If I go with this I'll be very aware of the type of gel.
Maybe I should rephrase - would anyone put this in their bedroom or is it Elvis on velvet?

Not Bad
.
I've been looking into these myself. I have two fireplaces in my apartment, but, due to safety issues, they were sealed up ages ago.
I've been looking into several options.
This is one we really like:

.
I'm seeing other posting photos, which I never knew to be possible on the forum. After viewing source, I see IMG SRC tags, so I am going to test a basic HTML tag and see if this works.

tacky? no..
I think those are only tacky when you add fake wood..
been looking at the fireplaces for over a year myself, and there seem to be 3 brands, conmoto - blomus - heinze/geniol. All different, but tempting.
did you see the conmoto loungefire?
