What do you think of this then?
My theory is that art becomes design when the object is functional.

Not design but art
Gijs Bakker, ( http://www.gijsbakker.com/ )a Dutch jeweller produced a set of 'unwearable rings' in the 1970's. I would say that these were no longer rings but miniature sculptures.

Um.
The toilet itself is functional (provided the plumbing is there).
Embedding the toilet in a concrete block surrounded by brick... not so much. It looks painful and unusable (that might explain the urine splatters all over the rim).
It could be considered art by some (not sure who), but a rather "crappy" attempt at that.

This thread can be very...
This thread can be very interesting. The borders between art and design are indeed increasingly vague and it seems clear that some contemporary designers are sometimes strongly inspired by the production of conceptual artists of the second part of 20th century.
PS. Michael (yoDesign) We are happy that you took the initiative of launching this kind of discussions on the forum. We are obviously not opposed to the links towards other sites that offer complementary contents, but this attitude which consists in intervening here mainly to try to attract us on your google group becomes a little bit tedious.

As art, it's pretty crappy 🙁
Functionality leaves something to be desired, especially if one takes a "wide stance" Seems rather pointless and a tad redneck. What's out front? An overstuffed cat pee stained couch on the front porch of the double-wide with a 1969 Buick Electra 225 on blocks as a guest house to the side of the trailer!!! 🙂
Now, if it was a picture of the Kohler "Hat Box"! That's a different story altogether.

I don't see art.
I see an object functioning as it was intended. And wrongly placed.
A training device for a family of boys learning target practice?
I encourage the outdoor pee. Saves on water flushing and hopefully
helps keep the deer out of the hostas and the bears out of the compost.
A much more natural target could be set up for the young ones.
But not art or design. Maybe considered creative by someone. Not sure who.

Boy check out the wood fence behind..
Ewww...a toilet and an outdoor fire pit, place combined together doesn't make it art.
But like I've said before it maybe art to someone, as everything is art if you dissect it. Trash can be art when the attempt is executed correctly. Is it visual pleasing? But then again, who's attempting what and when do you stop before something is complete? I struggle with this one, and can ramble on...
When trash turns into folk art (how'd you like to have this guy as a neighbor?)...
Watts Towers is an amazing folk art sculpture. It is also known as Watts Towers of Simon Rodia State Historic Park and is a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, a California state historic landmark, a U.S. national historic landmark as well as being on the National Register of Historic Places.
CALIF. HISTORICAL LANDMARK NO. 993 - WATTS TOWERS OF SIMON RODIA - The Watts Towers are perhaps the nation's best known work of folk art sculpture. Using simple hand tools, cast off materials (glass, shell, pottery pieces and broken tile) Italian immigrant Simon Rodia spent 30 years building a tribute to his adopted country and a monument to the spirit of individuals who make their dreams tangible. Rodia's Towers inspired many to rally and preserve his work and protect it for the future.

Watts Towers =
lovely and special.
Bricked toilet = why ? Whoever built it apparently doesn't him- (or her-) self use the toilet, for the excessive material in front of the bowl renders it well-nigh useless either for sitting or for standing.
And those missing bricks -- did the maker discover too late that the flush handle needed room around it ?
Whew ! Let's go back indoors. Actually, Rockland's right -- though women have a harder time with al fresco relief than men, don't they ? Or is that a sexist remark ?

Built like a brick shithouse...I believe the reference is supposed to be...
Well, okay, I get it, but do I want this thing in my foyer? or by my patio spotlighted at night?
If it flushed, and had an insinkerator in it, it might be practical to have next to my grill for the gristle and miscellaneous cooking waste.
If brick with puns were truly this designer's forte, might I recommend a brick Marilyn Monroe or Rita Haworth. "She's built like a brick shit house." ;-0

paulanna...
It always good to keep Firefox with BugMeNot add-on on your hard drive. Maybe Bugmenot can access the link anonymously. 🙂
