well -
I contacted a local modern furniture dealer specializing in scandinavian furniture and their representative said that they looked 80's and probably none of their clients would be interested (concerning a sale) - she said she would look it up later to find the designer - but hasn't got back to me - I don't know what the chances are of finding out the designer from that source seeing that they are not interested in buying. In otherwords - not much luck! I would not have guessed the yellow vinyl being a color popular in the 80's, but then again I am not the furniture expert. If there was a book at my library were I could look these up I would in a heart beat.

I think the distraction are the headrests. While, if you like them, they make the chair, they are the design statement of the design. Without the headrests, I think they would be much more accessible. I hope you bought them for yourself, and not for sale. I don't hate them, but the headrest is somewhat awkward for me, personally. If you bought them for you, enjoy them and who cares. I mean, I understand you desire to learn about them, but don't worry about the resale value.
It should be easy enough to learn about them. The company is still in business. Go to their website, and just ask them a question:

Found the info!!
Hi,
I found the information on your chairs. Seems that they were for institutional use and apparently from the early 1970's (according to the quoted media source-Mobilia 1972 no.205).
Hope this helps.

I give up!
The chair is on the furnitureindex.dk website. Enter 'fritz hansen' for the manufacter on the search page. The chair will be #408 in the results.
I suppose the links would not work since the site has 'secure' and 'non-secure' pages for some reason.
Well, I hope this gets you to the right place!
thanks!!
thanks for all the responses/ input - i volunteered a year at a hospice and can totally see these being in a hospital or something of the sort.
it is also funny that you mention the size of the headrests - they are quite large - and the result is very comfortable! i think at 30 dollars a piece, i am happy to aquire these and hold on to them as a starving, furniture obsessed, student. I really like the feel of the chair and the fact that they are adjustable -
thanks podboy for the help with the links - i dont know why i didnt find it on furnitureindex.dx the first couple of times i searched -
this is one of the many reasons I really enjoy this forum - helping each other out with our design inquiries. thanks again.
