Hi All,
I just picked up this chair and have spent quite a bit of time looking through Swedish chairs. It has wonderful lines a distinctive back, and I was wondering if anyone knew an associated region or designer. The chair appears to be mahogany with horse hair upholstery. I also included a photo of a relatively strange screw. Secondary wood is a hardwood. Thanks for your help, either way I will get it reupholstered Josef Frank or tufted leather?

While it is not to my tastes, I think it looks like a fine, well made chair. It looks 30's or 40's maybe older. My frame of reference extends to the 30's, the period just before Kaare Klint began to define Danish Modern. If the screws are stainless steel, they are new. Older furniture used brass. I learned this from an old Swedish, hardware guy. The head on the screw looks very new to me. It is not the straight cut, single groove screw I recognize from the 50's.
If it really uses horse hair - perhaps the best filling ever - this would confirm the dating as pre-Scandinavian modern or early modern. In this category I put Frits Henningsen, early Kindt-Larsen, early Ole Wanscher, etc. Whatever you do, do NOT throw away the horse hair. Wash it if needed, dry it and use it again. It will outlast anything you can use to stuff your chairs.
When looking at it a second time, I can see why you like it. It is not the period that most of us are into, but it seems like a fine example of a very good older piece.

I reupholstered a couple of those years ago.
Mine didn't have any marks on them--i got them as bare frames.
Some friends of mine who are dealers have a pair right now but I don't see them on their website. I'll ask about the chairs next week when I see them. I know they were referring to them by name but I can't remember what it was offhand.
They're elegant little chairs and also very comfortable. I don't think they're meant to be tufted, though!

OK, never mind, I'm pretty sure
that my friend was just referring to them as "bergère" chairs, which is just the style, not the maker.
I agree with ScanDesign on the probable age, though.

ScanDesign and Spanky, thank you for your replies. Even the smallest details and suggestions are appreciated. I find the chair's lines quite beautiful, and the proportions of the chair perfectly petite. I included a couple extra photos, including the horsehair. I am always fine with adding another well crafted chair into the mix! Thanks again, and I will post if I find anything else out. Spanky, I agree tufting might be overdoing it.

Horsehair
ScanDesign, I will absolutely clean and reuse the horsehair, an excellent suggestion!
