I picked up this bureau in Lille, France at the Braderie. It was a mess. I took it apart, sanded it down, and finished it with teak oil.

All of the secondary wood is oak, never polyurethaned, just waxed. The outside is a veneer that had a nasty, dirty, peeling, poly finish. Is it pecan?

Some more hints, the oak back is not finished, the back edges of the shelves, drawers and drop-down fronts are not finished. Those unfinished back edges still have the pencil marks, in french, delineating left and right, top and bottom, (i.e. "1 gauche, 2 centre, 3 droite, haute, bas, etc.)

So, what is the veneer? Some kind of fruitwood?

A shot in the dark--
bleached mahogany, perhaps?
(I find wood ID extremely difficult and can only positively identify a few types with absolute assurance. I venture this wild guess timidly, figuring I'll never improve my wood game unless I practice.)
Also an opportunity to say: nice piece!
