I'm looking at a 3-seat Florence Knoll sofa, in leather with the Knoll tag under the cushions. All materials and details seem authentic.
There are two things that are interesting -- the seat cushions are removable (not the back cushions), and there are no buttons, only the wonderful tufting.
The sofa apparently dates from the early 60s or so -- any of these details raise questions regarding authenticity? Seems bona fide, but I can't find anything about these details online. A dealer I know said the original leather didn't have buttons.
Knoll is unresponsive. Thanks!
Florence Knoll Sofa details... ?
Thanks so much jesgord and the_beloved. For the life of me, I couldn't see whether there were buttons or not on some of the photos. I wonder when they added the buttons?
Any idea of the cushions? With the three-seater, it seems to make sense that the seat cushions would not be attached.
Speaking of Florence Knoll...
Speaking of Florence Knoll sofas -- I have one, an early 60s settee, and it is missing one of the bolts that goes into the chrome side rails and holds the sofa body to the rails. I wrote to Knoll asking about a replacement bolt, but it's been a couple of months and haven't received a response. By any chance, would anyone on here know how I could find one of these bolts?
Thanks
This is true
and from my previous research the difference is contained within the porportion of the frame as well as the "density of the legs." That is, the legs on the Knoll couch should be solid and not hollow which is the case with Steelcase couches. However, from earlier reports the latter still performs well.
There have been many forums in regards to this matter and I am always taken back by the variety of manufacturer's who have copied this sofa.
Just curious when there is a tag that reads Knoll Art Metal vs just Knoll what year is the production?
Knoll Art Metal
Florence Knoll sold the company to Art Metal in 1959. Art Metal was eventually purchased by a financial firm called Heller in 1967, and in 1969 Knoll Associates became Knoll International; I'm pretty sure that no Knoll furniture was labeled "Art Metal" after that.
So... 1959-60 to 1967-69.
Knoll Arm Chair?
Did steelcase make a version of the Knoll Arm Chair with tufted seat cushions? Everything seemed right with this pair that I went to inspect with exception to the arm length, it just felt slimmer than my Knoll couch. Here are some details: There are no Knoll tags only a serial numbered tag from a bank, the back cushion is attached to the frame while the bottom cusion is removable, the legs are solid, etc... Does anyone have any photgraphs of the underside so that I can compare? Thank you in advance...
