So this is not a vintage Miller clock so popular here, rather something made in China, but I like it. I need something that screams the date to me. The only ones I have seen are on ebay and shipping from Hong Kong, so the shipping is high. Maybe there is something similar or better out there?

I like TWEMCO.
From their website ( http://www.twemco.com/):

Our company, TWEMCO possesses over 30 years experiences of manufacturing clocks in this kind. By virtue of its excellent craftsmanship and unique features (Invention Patented). Nowadays, we also provide our treasure customers with radio-controlled wall clocks. We have had more than a half million TWEMCO clocks installed in banking corporations, commercial offices and public venues where need continuously announcing exact time, dates and months to the people. With the worldwide appear of our clocks, or company's brand name TWEMCO becomes so wellknown and famous in the horology field."
I had the BQ-50 in white. It kept perfect time for four or five years, then died. I haven't been able to find anyone that can repair it. I really miss it though. Just keep in mind the flips can be rather loud.
I bought mine in Hong Kong but there is at least one online store selling them:

The Twemco clock is a blatant knockoff of a Solari Udine clock originally designed in the 60's. A nice picture can be seen in "Italy, The New Domestic Landscape" When it comes to flip clocks, Solari is the originator of the technology and still the best in the business. The Gino Valle Cifra series of clocks are all really nice.

william, I don't think the TWEMCO:s qualify as blatant on the knock-off scale, but they are certainly extremely inspired by the Solaris.
Quite frankly, now that I have seen these vintage Italian models a TWEMCO is out of the question. TWEMCO is more fun to say though.

william-holden-caulfield, I don't think all Flip clocks necessarily look alike. As for the Twemco/Solari comparison, the similarities go beyond coincidence, regardless. For instance: The shape of the clock, the format of the display and even the location of the logo are all nearly identical.
expensive + blog alternative
Jesgord is 100 percent right. Gino Valle is the man behind the classic flip clock. Some of these clocks were sold in the moma shop for a while (although I think moma no longer sells them at this point). The original clocks are not so easy to find these days, and they tend to go for more money than I am prepared to spend on a clock (often 200 USD), even though I think the model is a true classic in every sense of the word ..
The blog entry below has an interesting take on the Gino Valle clocks:
and a pic of a Cifra 2 (just for fun, a lovely clock):

Gustaf, Solari is still in business, but I think they now only make displays for industrial applications (train stations, airports, etc.)
Here is a link to their site

Solari website & company history
I believe this is the current Solari website (below). As is plainly obvious, their main business at this point focuses on the larger industrial applications of flip clocks (cf. Airport & train terminals etc.)

If you are interested in the company, the .pdf article is interesting for more background information.

jesgord and ite, thank you!
The quick and dirty search I did on Google was not very helpful as apparently there is a famous Brazilian model by the same name.
It was interesting to get some insight into the flip clock history and to know where TWEMCO's influence came from. But yes, it would seem they no longer do consumer models, although the models under "Industrial clocks" look like they could work at home. I will have to find a supplier. If not, that makes TWEMCO the next best thing.
