Hi - I am hoping there is someone here who knows a lot more about Danish furniture than I do, and can help me figure something out. I have this Finn Juhl tray table -- it's a maple tray that fits atop a brushed stainless steel base. I've had it a long time and I bought it from a fellow who had had it since it was new, in the 1960s. I never knew much about it and thought it was odd that I never saw another one, except that it was "reissued" by a manufacturer in Denmark, One Collection, about 10 years ago. So the other day, I was looking in a book on Danish furniture (in Danish) and I saw an entry on the tray table. I don't know Danish so I took a photo of the page with my phone and then I showed it to a Swedish friend of mine. She said her Danish isn't great but she translated it as saying that the table was designed in 1965 but not in production until 2001. Now I know for a fact my table is much older than 2001, but if it wasn't in production, how can that be? Anybody know anything about this table?
I actually wrote Hansen and...
I actually wrote Hansen and Sorensen a few months ago asking about the history of the tray table, but no one ever wrote me back. I just wrote to the Ordrupgaard Museum to see if they'd put me in touch with the person who curates the Finn Juhl house. I hope I hear back from them. But if anyone on here has any suggestions on where I might turn to find more information, I'd be very appreciative.
Just following up on my own...
Just following up on my own thread here. I heard back from the Finn Juhl House finally (apparently they give employees generous vacations there!) and the curator thinks the table could be a prototype. Pretty cool! I think I might have to find something else for my television.
I don't really know how to...
I don't really know how to find out. I was hoping the Finn Juhl House would have a definitive answer, but she couldn't say for sure. The man I bought it from was a pretty elderly fellow who had a incredible collection of Scandinavian furniture. I purchased a few smaller things from him that I love but to him were very minor pieces and he was just getting rid of superfluous stuff. I asked him about the table when I bought it, and he didn't have that much to say, other than he thought they didn't make them for very long and that it will collectible one day. I didn't pay much for it and he clearly didn't think it was anything that special.
The Finn Juhl House curator...
The Finn Juhl House curator did suggest I write to the company that makes the current production of the table. She thinks they would know for sure. I did write to them a couple months ago and never heard back, but I just wrote again and this time dropped her name, so maybe that will help. I'll update the thread if I get any more information.
