Fellow DA-ers - I'm looking for some more information about my Chieftain chair. I had my parents pick it up and haven't yet gotten my eyes on it in person. I've been told it had been in the family since the 50s or 60s and that it is teak. I know from previous threads that there have been several makers licensed to produce the chair. I'd love to hear some thoughts about the who/where/when of my chair.
Thanks!
I hope you did not pay much for it
...and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that chair is not from the 50s or 60s. It's not even from the 20th century. Neither is it teak. It is ash with a walnut colored stain and it came not from Denmark or the US, but from mainland China.
It is a contemporary knock-off.
Thanks for the info Pegboard!
Good news, I didn't pay much for it. I was weary of it without being able to see it in person. I was expecially skeptical of the "it's from the 50s and 60s" thing as I doubted it was the real deal.
I did see recently that two of the identical chairs to mine were sold at auction in Chicago for $2300 and $2600.

I saw your post too.
... I'm glad I didn't pay near either $2600 or $699 for it. It was cheap enough that I didn't mind taking a leap on it. I also see that most of the original productions - even by Baker - are leather. It seems like several have come up in this orange fabric over the past couple years.
Wow
That is remarkable.
That's the problem with these new knock offs. Some are so close dimensionally that someone without a lot of experience can easily be deceived.
These things are appearing in the secondary market now in auctions like the one you linked to and like this one: http://www.ragoarts.com/lot/561805
Dealers on 1st Dibs have even listed some. These #45 knock-offs were posted recently: http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/club-chairs/marvelous-pair-finn...
In my opinion this is a terrible development. It undermines the authentic vintage examples and the credibility of any auction house or dealer who handle these fakes either knowingly or unwittingly. I actually alerted Rago when that fake chieftain appeared and they were very nice, very responsive, and immediately removed it from the auction.

Knock-offfs have become...
Knock-offfs have become prolific. In the last month, I've randomly encountered knock off of designs by Arne Vodder, Finn Juhl, Grant Featherston in stores like HomeGoods. Strong attention to proportions make it a challenge to novice buyers. Those familiar with the originals will immediately notice discrepancies. The dead giveaway has always been the assembly. Hex screws etc.
