I hope someone could shed some light on this for me. I had the same questions years ago, and only found the side chair to be in existence for mass production. I even asked a close friend who has been a Knoll retailer and obsessor for years and years, maybe decades! It certainly looks real.
I have 3...
At the moment I have 3 of these bertoia style fiberglass chairs (left of pic). none are marked, but i'm fairly certain they were made in New England as I've picked up a few others over the past few yrs and have never seen pics of anyone outside of New England owning/selling them.
I typically get $250-350 for a knoll diamond chair and $200-300 for these just to give you all an idea of what they're worth on the open market. personally, i think the fiberglass diamond shaped shell is amazing and I can't believe Knoll didn't mass produce these....maybe at some point down the road...

I'm betting if you'd never...
I'm betting if you'd never seen either version before, you would probably be more dazzled by the wire bertoia. I also think if you'd seen only the fiberglass version, you would be lifting your jaw up from the rug after having first layed eyes on the wire. Is it wire chair fatigue that makes the fiberglass version so appealing to some? Though neat-o as a curio, I think it takes the design down a peg; it even looks rather dated.
Like most others...
I think the authentic Knoll fiberglass version posted above looks quite nice. The reproductions just look a bit off due to the base mainly, but the diamond proportions could be wrong as well. I like the Bertoia side chairs in fiberglass too and wouldn't mind having one (probably less prone to breaking than the wire chairs?).
