While more 'art' than 'design' one cannot deny that the installations of Cristo & Jeanne Claude incorporate not only elements of design theory, but also of design process, and fabrication.

I had an opportunity to hear Cristo and Jeanne Claude speak about their artwork. She was witty and biting and took no sass from anyone. I was also fortunate enough to see "The Gates" project in Central Park when it was erected. The hundreds of saffron colored arches and banners made the park a warm and joyful place - despite being the middle of February.

It was a stunning event.

She
was quoted on the radio yesterday, saying something to the effect that their work was "art -- not something with any function or purpose other than that: to be art."

"Umbrellas"
In October of 1991, I drove up to Berkeley from San Diego to visit my sister. I wasn't sleeping much in those days, and I hadn't slept at all the night before the drive. Plus my car was stiff and loud, and it had taken over four hours to get through Orange County and LA... So I was pretty numb when I first saw the umbrellas, and it took a good four or five seconds to realize that they were actually real.
