Thanks. What you said about gun stocks got me to looking, and according the website linked below, the first copy lathe was created in 1819 (by Thomas Blanchard) specifically for making duplicates of gun stocks.

My favorite part is during the Peacock chair video. Right after they describe how the seat can only be made by one person they show an older gentleman applying glue to the dowel holes, with his glue pot sitting right on the aformentioned papercord seat! Talk about confidence!
