I'm creating this thread to vent about estate sales. Anyone else ever wait overnight, without a car, in 15 degree weather for an item that ended up not being there? Ever wait overnight and end up only buying a stupid book on how to care for cats, for the cat that you don't have? The item I wanted was one of my dream items, but the estate sale lady dropped it and broke it into a million pieces, and didn't feel like the listing needed to be updated to reflect that. She also took another prominently featured item to an auction house, so that wasn't there either. She left all the books on cats though - cool. Anyway, that was this morning for me. Any other horror stories?

I feel for you!
I also hate...
I feel for you!
I also hate it when they have a fucking "preview" before the sale date where all their special dealer friends are invited to gobble up all the good stuff so when you get there what you thought you were going to get isn't there anymore. Estate sale people need to update their descriptions to reflect that certain things aren't there anymore otherwise it's false advertistment!
Btw what item was it that you wanted if you don't mind telling us.

One of these. It's been on...
One of these. It's been on my wish list for a long time, I just can't pay THOSE sort of prices. As a means of digging that knife a little deeper into my chest, she told me that it'd been priced at $50... I'm still healing 🙂
And my very understanding girlfriend DID join me with a car and heat part way through the night, thankfully. I did spent a good 4-5 hrs with no car though. And I had the cops called on me for loitering...

Ha, I don't know...
Ha, I don't know superdeluxe. I hadn't wanted to, but I've been perusing this book, and they make it sound preeeeetty good.
Here're a few gems from this new purchase:
"Two cats, like two heads, are better than one. Unlike two heads, two cats are easy to get" 🙂
And in the chapter "How to Destroy Unwanted Kittens" we're given this advice: "If you can't keep the kittens, the kindest thing is to kill them as soon as they are born...the mother cat will forget them in a few hours" ha!

from memory there is a thread here about the merits, or otherwise, of having your cat declawed to protect your furniture. you might wanna read that as well. im pro-claw - it's actually illegal where i come from.

Yeah - to be honest, I can't...
Yeah - to be honest, I can't get down with having a cat...we had them when I was growing up, and they both seemed to have a fondness for using my things as a litterbox. Kind of soured me on the whole arrangement... I understand the upsides of the companionship cats offer, but the "all my things encrusted in cat urine" is just too much of a downside for me 🙂 btw, I DO have good experiences in life as well, ha.

brbeard, you actually...
brbeard, you actually believed her story that she broke it?
Sounds like she sold it to a dealer before the sale began.

Yeah, I definitely...
Yeah, I definitely considered that that was a possibility - this company has a history of refusing to do any pre-sales though. And she seemed to be being honest about it. Maybe I got double-duped though, who knows...
Pre-sales ARE another problem with estate sales. When they do pay off they can pay off big though! Thrill of victory/agony of defeat and all of that.

our cats
compliment, not detract from, my surroundings. They are outdoor cats, which helps. And yes, fully clawed.

maybe you can use your experience to design and create the worlds first carless estate sale lurker compact chair.... sounds like it needs camoflague, lie flat capabilities, reading light and motion sensors to warn you of moving lurkers trying to skip you.

lol, I think you're right...
lol, I think you're right Killian! and it sounds like my "motion detector" to warn me of skippers should possibly be a cat (fully clawed)? I don't know, it's still in the prototype stage here.

I dont know
how the math works out. I understand dealers waiting, they are working. But someone who can afford to buy on a regular basis, suggests some income, and assuming you are not a trustifarian means that your time (and perhaps comfort) are valuable. And of course all the hours spent not getting something (like this example) have to be factored in to the cost of the stuff you did get. Perhaps the time spent waiting could be put towards more paying work and spending closer to retail. You would get what you were after every time, and you wouldn't freeze and have the cops called on you. Of course, if you hate your work, I could see how the former might be preferable :).

The thrill....
The thrill must be in the hunt.
And the joy is in the stories that will be told.
