There is a local dealer here in Northern California who seems to be importing mid-century modern furniture from England.
Many of them are made by G-Plan. I was always under the impression that G-Plan and English MCM furniture were not of very good quality and not very collectible. His prices are fairly high, do you think buying one of these pieces is a good investment or should I wait a little more and hope to find an authentic Scandinavian piece for a little more money?

You are right about G Plan...
You are right about G Plan furniture, it is not the greatest quality. Most of the pieces I've come across are directly inspired by the Danish and Scandinavian designers but I think G Plan was considered mostly low-end furniture.
If youre in California, I think youre better off investing in authentic Scandinavian or in good quality American furniture from that period which should be abundant in your area.

Well...
it's better than BAD scandanavian furniture. Some of the g-plan that I have handled has been pretty nice, actually. I sold some chairs and a table that I thought were quite nice. It does lack a certain confidence that good Danish furniture has

Actually the quality of G Plan is high, in some cases as good or better than some of the furniture produced in Scandinavia at the time.
It was aspirational furniture aimed at the middle class and was fairly expensive to buy.
Having said this, there is a lot of it out there, and I would look for the original Scandinavian pieces which inspired G Plan, I am sure some die hard G Plan collectors would disagree.

Far from
Far from being 'directly inspired by the Danish and Scandinavian designers' quite a few G Plan pieces were designed by I B Kofod Larsen.
That said, I'd rather have Danish originals, and would consider them a better investment, especially outside the UK where there is no G Plan fanbase.
(G plan was never particularly inexpensive; I'd call it more middle range than low end)

I think
the Kofod Larsen pieces are maybe a decent useable investment.
The prices for the more desirable items has certainly shot up in the last 2 or 3 years.

There are a few pieces
Which should hold their value. The Housemaster chairs are potentially a good investment. Kofod Larsen pieces seem to be popular and there are a few nice chairs and the odd sideboard. Having said that, a lot of G Plan is pretty generic, cheap and easily available here in the UK

Thanks everyone for the help....

I think I'm going to pass on this dealers stuff.
He's basically asking the same (or more) amount of money for these English/G Plan pieces that the Danish stuff usually goes for.
I noticed while looking at photos of the english/gplan pieces that the details and finishing on them just doesnt seem up to par with the higher quality Scandinavian stuff.

G-Plan story
Some of the E Gomme series stand on their own merit. The story of English furniture is a different story to the Scandinavian or the U.S. Ernest Race, Gordon Russell, E.Gomme, Ercolani, Robin and Lucienne Day, William Plunkett, Geoffrey Harcourt, the period is reflected in the use and choice of materials. I think a general comparison, say between the work of Finn Juhl and a more generic "Scandinavian yields little useful information either.
