cauldfield and beloved
i agree with both of you.
i think the Ikea stuff is just fluff and a fad no real design to it, made for the mass produced, they hit a home run every now and then ,
I tell my 23 year old daughter
who we do not need to embarrass, .... (edited by DA) ....
to save your money for good classic stuff from Fritz Hansen, Herman Miller, Knoll, that stuff is tried and true and has stayed the test of time, to me IKEA stuff a flash in the Pan,
Whitespike
I played with the Ikea shelf unit and it feels sturdy. Only time would tell if it will hold, I'm sure if we respect it(like we would respect "The good"), then it would hold. I agree with LRF that most Ikea products are junk and save your money, Ikea surprised me on the quality and design of the shelf. Whitespike, did you ever find anything to hold you TV(pure curiosity).
Up the hip factor in your home or office with this fashion-forward chair and ottoman
based solely on the rave reviews, i just bought a set of eight for my brand new vintage nelson eames dining table.
i plan on using the chairs for dining purposes and the ottomans will be used as plates.
The Anga shelf system seems plenty sturdy
...considering it's wall-mounted aluminum & tempered glass.(Looking at the Ikea site, I'm not sure I understand how the arms are mounted on the standards, though.)
It's the optional cabinetry that skeeves me out-- melamine & particle board. Not pretty, after a year or two.
I'd buy the shelving sans cabinet pieces.
I'm considering the Anga syst...
I'm considering the Anga system for our new family room. I looked at it in the store---it consists of conventional standards and brackets, it's just that the standards are in front and are prettied up. You can put the brackets wherever you want. It wiggles from side to side a bit and there's probably a weight limit for the shelves, but it does look really nice.
I was gonna go with some MCM walnut cabinets that I got at auction but they just look too heavy and dark in the room. If I can unload them on Craigslist, I'm gonna get the Anga stuff.
I'm not so worried about the melamine (or is it foil?) finish on the drawer units. It won't be subject to the same amount of handling and wear that a table or kitchen cabinets will be, so it should keep its looks ok.
IKEA has some nice stuff and some trashy junk. You just have to be selective.
When Ikea opened up in the Twin Cities area,
(Minneapolis, St. Paul), most of the antique furniture shops closed their doors.
I never realized how much they relied on young college kids who needed furniture for their pads. Now that the kids run to Ikea, the seond hand furniture shops have noone to sell to.
But i do see a lot of Ikea furn in the trash to be hauled away.
I went there once. I have a Blu Dot paperclip bookshelf that is open-sided and I needed bookends to hold the books from falling down.
Ikea is a great place for bookends! They sell cheap chromed-wire bookends that fit onto the shelves themselves and stop the books from taking the death dive.
I understand that their textiles are decent too.
So, pass on the lousy-made furniture and go for the smalls.
