Hey all, Thanks to the invaluable advice I have received from members on this forum, I was able to successfully strip and revive this Eames chair I found on the street with 9 coats of paint. Thank you citrus strip!
cheers! David

Nice work
It's always good to see a mistreated piece lovingly restored. I hope you get many years of enjoyment out of the chair.

Yes, good job.
How did you restore sheen? Penetrol?

Sheen
Thanks. I thought i would have to use Penetrol, but was surprised at how much sheen was left after removing the many layers of paint. I think that the chair must have been first painted very early on, preserving the surface. Pledge is all i needed!

I thought I saw some
ScotchBrite pads among your stripping tools in your pics.
The thought of taking those to smooth fiberglass gives me the willies.
As far as I can tell, there is no gel coat, per se, on Eames shells. they're just chopped glass and colored resin compressed in a heated mould. It's conceivable that one could abrade the surface with incrementally finer grits to restore or increase sheen, though most examples probably wouldn't warrant the trouble and the risk of cutting through the fibers might be a concern.

The Scotch Pads
were basically to gently wipe away the huge amount of gunky paint that came off. I was careful not to scrub with them. Yes, there was no gel-coat per se, just clean fiberglass.

Thanks
This is the THIRD Eames shell chair I have found abandoned on the street in the East Village- One parchment rope edge x-base and one kelly green rocker. What are these people thinking?
