whats the deal with this? i have found several vintage ones where people have painted the back sides, i thought maybe it was original since i have found more than a few but the shockmounts were painted too, so im assuming they are not.

is this rare or have people painted these all over? and damn does it suck stripping the paint off!

Consider yourself lucky
...that they weren't "granite sprayed" (remember that aerosol substance from the 1980's that mimicked the look of stone?). I encountered a two-piece brass & wood Paul McCobb room divider at Salvation Army, mummified in the stuff.

It is original.
They painted the whole backs and also the shockmounts on the early upholstered armshells.
