Hey ya'll
I was given a plycraft knockoff loung a couple days ago, I've already stripped off the pleather in prep for a leather re-skin and gonna refinish the wood panels in a darker walnut shade. I can't stand the ugly crome bases and headrest mounts; I was thinking while looking at my aluminum base armshells and table, what if I rigged these to fit the chair? I would buy extras of course. I know you can buy some bases from the swivel-parts website, but I though these would be cooler. I've seen the large coffee table base, it has the larger diameter column but ina shorter length and would be perfect for the chair. And the ottoman could use a combo of this tube and the smaller chair base.
Whaddya think?
I
was thinking about that...on the swivel parts site you can buy the tilting mechanism, and also you can buy a wood wedge that will give you that angle. Not that I wouldn't just make it myself but it would take care of the agle issue. OR if I was REALLY cool I would CAD a bracket up here at work and spit it out of the CNC machine under a project number!
I think I'm going to have to take some measurements when I get home and do a little photoshop to see if it's worth that hassle. I already have two armshells and a dining table with these bases, might start to get a little obnoxious having every piece with these X-bases! Kinda like the peg legs on my couch, sideboard, credenza, setee...
Yeah
My fellow furniture addicted friend pointed that out. But I think the table x-bases are large enough to prevent that; actually I've seen a bunch of Plycraft chairs with only 4-star bases. Not that I would trust their human factors studies!(as if they did any). I figured it was worth looking at the eames x's, worse case I'll just buy the swivel site's repros. I took a photo (below) of my chair and of my table and chairs with the x-bases, the table base is pretty frigging huge! About 48" square, with arms about 16" while the Plycraft's are only 14. If you draw a line between two feet and measure to the center column, it's 11.5, about the same as on the Plycraft 5-star base. So, I figure the amount of lean-back-and-fall-on-your-ass protection is about the same for the two.
Other ideas for the project include re-lamming the exterior plys and t-nutting the arms on from the inside so I can hide the screws under the new ply. Also I want to round the edges at the seat and back junction since it looks pretty bad all squared off like it is. That oughtta keep me busy for awhile..
