OMG.
I mean, you know... I have a good bit of that too, so I do know how devastating it can be at times. Now I see why you want to "battle" endlessly into the late hours of the night, and were so disappointed at the end. I know you were okay and made jokes about it but still... Perhaps you should respect OCD as the serious psychological disorder that it is-- and get an evaluation?
I got lots of art made by channelling my OCD into a productive area, but you do have to be careful not to rationalize too much, lest it will eat you up (like rust eats metal)

Phonegirl. My two cents, (based on the photos of what I can see of the condition), is to lightly clean loose rust, as suggested by a number of people). Get some repro bikini pads and call it a day. Enjoy their patina.
