There doesn’t seem to have been a thread on the Eames 670 shock mounts for a while, so I thought I’d start one 😉
I’ve an Eames 670 Lounge that needs its shock mounts replacing. The shock mounts haven’t broken off yet, but the back shell is currently resting on the chair shell. All that I know about its history is that it was bought in the UK and judging by the seat cushion hooks is pre-1971.
I was wondering if anybody had purchased shock mounts from http://www.design-restoration-spares.com, and if so, any opinion of them?
I’m also having a devil of a job getting my hands on some Scotch-Weld 1838 (nothing new there apparently), but I can get PC-7 at the local hardware store. I know that Special K Products have tested and recommend PC-7, but that’s attaching the glue to a metal plate. Has anyone tried PC-7 successfully with neoprene and /or urethane shock mounts - specifically those from Hume Modern, Graham Mancha or Modern Conscience? I have to admit to be somewhat reluctant to rely on cyanoacrylate to hold my chair together.
Finally – best oil? The only ‘gunstock’ oil I can find in this part of the world (think kangaroos) is TruOil. The alternatives are the tried and tested BLO, pure tung oil or one of the Ruskin / Liberon /Watco “Danish oils”(which I believe are variations on a theme of TruOil i.e. oil + varnish + solvent). Is there a consensus for maintaining the original finish?

PC-7 is what I used to reattach the 2 shock mounts on the back panel of mine 10 years ago and they're holding up just fine. Curiously, according to the previous owner, they were HM factory replacements (neoprene backs) that were failing at the glue joint! The mounts themselves came off clean and appeared as new, so I removed as much of the old glue from the panels as possible and re-glued with PC-7.
Any oil finish will do.
