Vitra has recently re-issued the Eames/Saarinen Organic Chair. Has any of You design-addicts 🙂 seen and/or tried it? Since the Vitra dealers around where I live consider it a collectors item, they will only take it home on command, leaving me with nothing but pictures of this mid-century classis.
Any thoughts?

Can be seen under the new Vitra Home Collection:

Seen it...
I've seen it at Vitra. Sat in it aswell. What can I say, it looks very nice, sits ok too. I don't see a too big market for this modell. If they don't sell to many of them, therefore take it out of the program again in a few years, it automatically becomes a collectors item. I personally would not easily pay the EUR. 1086,55 excl. VAT for this chair. I don't think this re-edition will shock the world.

Who else has manufactured the Organic chair? Can I get a history 101 from anyone? Also, is anyone currently knocking this chair off? What thinks yous of the photos below?

The two Vitra editions I've...
The two Vitra editions I've seen in person didn't have a tag either. But they also had the black painted legs and I was at a dealer's place, so there was no questioning it. Never seen natural walnut legs such as this on a newer Organic chair.

White on White
White Furniture are knocking it off. If it isn't marked, it's most likely White on White. I think they sell them between 175 and 200.

I was aware of whiteonwhite...
Not aware the saps are doing the Organic chair however. But the quality of the chair pictured certainly doesn't strike me as whiteonwhite. And the swatches don't match either. I don't know. I'm a bit perplexed. Never would've thought a knockoff would've come from the avenue this chair came.
Who else produced this chair to your knowledge, Pegboard?

Aside from the original?
As far as I know, there is only the original chairs (Heywood_Wakefield had a hand in the manufacture), the Vitra reissue, and the White Furniture knock-off. I saw the White copy when I was in NY and was surprised with the quality. Some of their knock-offs are really pretty bad. Others are remarkably close. Guess it's hit or miss when you job out these things to get those third-world labor rates.
On a related note, I saw the Saarinen exhibit this week in St. Louis. Very nice. If comes to your area, I'd recommend you check it out.
This Wright auction gives a pretty good description of the original development of the group of designs that Eames and Saarinen did.

I saw a real vintage one at the Saarinen exhibit over the winter
and I consider it something of a 'work in progress'. The shell is beautifully designed, but the legs seem a bit dorky.
Luckily, both Eames and Saarinen added more grace and beauty to their respective chairs' legs after they worked on this mid-1940's chair project.

color makes the difference
I am a vitra representative and I had the opportunity to sit in a black organic chair before the re-edition, I considered it comfortable but did not love the design. Months later someone bought a red chair from me, when it arrived I fell immediately in love with the color, I believe the color brought out the best in the chair.

The color changes the look of those rather odd legs?
I don't think so....but the shell IS quite beautiful.
