Hello - I recently had an Eames Management Chair re-upholstered. While I'm happy with the result overall, I'm a little bothered by how the vinyl rolls onto the back of the chair. Basically, it looks like there's too much slack at the bottom, while there's not enough at the top. Here are links to the photos.

BACK

(The dowel you see there is keeping the top roll from popping up.)

TOP - SIDE

BOTTOM - SIDE

Shall I have the upholsterer go back and fix this or is this something I can tweak myself? (I would have brought it to his attention right away, but I wasn't the one who picked up my chair from his shop.) It looks like the rolls are affixed with screws that have an allen key socket. Would it be possible to release these screws and shimmy the seat up a bit?

Let me know your thoughts - thank you

RE: Hi Hazel, it's hard to say...
Hi Tom - thanks for your insight. I didn't go to an authorized dealer because I honestly didn't realize it was an option. I also wanted a specific fabric, so I'm not sure I could have gotten that level of customization.
The more I look at the rolls, the more bothersome they are. I hope this upholstery can be salvaged, but I think I'm kidding myself at this point. It's too bad.

I hate to bust your bubble ,...
I hate to bust your bubble , We redo a that chair all the time and that is the way it comes out .
That is the hardest of all chairs to redo and we fight to not have that roll, but a lot of the time they do.. That chair has to be made in parts, you have to make the cover and fit it to the metal teeth on the chair. If you should be off by several inches
it will not fit the teeth and make the roll perfect. That happens when you have to machine sew the bellows, and the material some what shrinks up. since no one has a seamier like Herman Miller and with that material that is what happens. someone said send it back to the manufacturer, they call us as they do not want to be bothered by redoing one chair. We get 100s of calls a year to redo that chair, i always shy away from it cause i know how they turn out 90percent of the time and it is hard to make the customer happy with it. I have no idea who you chose to redo the chair, the only critic i have is the stitching could have been a little more straighter on the roll, but believe me no one could have done a better job. They made them impossible to recover .

No need to apologize at all,...
No need to apologize at all, LRF. I actually welcome this info and it makes me feel a bit better about the upholstery job -- at least I know I didn't go to a quack. Given your explanation, I'm not surprised that this chair would be next to impossible to re-do just like Herman Miller or Vitra.
In the meantime, do you have any advice as to how I can rein in these rolls myself? I'm currently using velcro to keep these rolls in check. Could there be a better solution?

Would it be possible to run a length of tightened elasticized cord under the edge of the seat? I don't really know the chair I have to admit, just a thought.
