Fortunately, it's possible to have good design
and nice things without breaking the bank and without ever resorting to buying ripoffs of well-known designs. (Or ripoffs of lesser-known pieces, either.)
You have to work at it and you probably won't be able to get everything at once, but the hunt can be a lot of fun. Look at any of the "last thing I got" threads (or whatever they're called)---all about great finds for cheap. It's very inspiring. The stuff is out there.
I can't afford an Eames lounge chair either, but I do have some other beautiful vintage lounge chairs that I love and that are just as great in their own way. I actually kind of like that my home doesn't look like a carbon copy of a lot of other ones out there where the main pieces are ones you see everywhere.

I may be mistaken, but
isn't the design for this set in the public domain now?
It's slightly off-topic, I know, but there are valid points to be made on both sides of this issue. The fact is that people buy inferior and pirated products all the time for various reasons and always have.
The Eames Lounge is a luxury item and is priced accordingly. Those able to tell the difference between an authorized copy and the knock-offs are also more likely to take offense to the latter. To me it's like religion and politics. I don't go there with casual acquaintances unless I'm looking for a debate or a fat lip.
Full disclosure: I own a vintage ES670-671 and wouldn't buy a knock-off of anything. I also own a knock-off Noguchi cocktail table that is nearly indiscernible from the HM version. Someone gave it to me... really!

The group is right, though there is no need to be brutal. I cannot at all afford to buy one new, however, I own four, along with many other classic pieces of mid-century design. The hunt for great design is what this forum is all about and appreciating the originals, the patina'd, the weirdly adapted classics..etc. Begin the hunt and enjoy.
