I purchased an Eames Lounge reproduction (much more akin to the Vitra version in terms of the slimmer cushions along with the Vitra base) and am finding that the cushions are a tad too firm for my taste.
I've sat in brand-new licensed Lounges before but found them to be a little more plush (sinking in rather than the resting-on-top feeling) than my own. Considering that the chair I purchased is a near-identical (seriously, I've analyzed the hell out of every possible aspect for comparison) I was hoping that I may just be able to swap out the foam for something more comfortable without losing the shape/form.
Has anyone had success replacing the foam in their Eames Lounge and if so what was it that worked for you?
Thanks!
-Beau
P.S. - Included is a picture of my chair and the place where it was ordered from for reference.

I just checked my cushions an...
I just checked my cushions and they are all zippered so replacing the foam and stuffing would be an easy task. I only mention this since some reproductions are merely stapled or not easily serviceable.

Therin lies the rub, eh?
You bought this thing without actually sitting in one first?

Considering I live in Florida and this was shipped from NYC I didn't really have much of a chance or choice to be able to sit in it before buying. Even stores with a licensed HM are quite far away from where I live. With that being said the chair is comfortable but I believe with a little effort it could be improved. I'm quite satisfied with the chair even if no modifications are made since I made an informed purchase based on many positive reviews. I'm no sucker.

?
What if you were to remove the firm foam, and replace with (feather) down filling?

Take the chair to an
upholsterer, remove the cushions that offend, test softer foams in the chair, have them remove the original foam and trim new foam to copy the shape, then have them insert new foam and redo the button tufting.
Bam. Done.

Silly thought but....
Sit in it more. The foam will break in. My chair was firm as a rock when I first bought it and within a few months of nightly sitting it had softened up considerably. Now, 4 years later it is *almost* as plush as my friends vintage Eames.
Seems like a lot of trouble to go through replacing all of the foam (which means you need to redo all the buttons as well).

LuciferSum,
That's pretty ...
LuciferSum,
That's pretty much been my thoughts up until this point since it has definitely softened up in the few months since I got it. I wasn't sure if the softening would continue much beyond what it is now but based on what you've said this is certainly encouraging.
Thanks for the replies everyone else. I may talk with a upholstery person to get some more insight but until then I'll just be enjoying it in the meantime. Perhaps I've just been having a bad back in general lately since I'm sitting in it now and I really shouldn't be complaining 🙂

The feather down filling...
The feather down filling isn't a bad idea though considering they HMs use to be made that way...
Has anyone converted their foam versions to feather-down?

Lucifersum
Would you post a picture of your eames lounge chair? I too have the same one and have experienced similar issues with the foam being pretty firm. I want to see how it ages after four years of sitting.

.
That feeling that's stopping you enjoying your chair is called guilt.

Look at any of the numerous threads on here and elsewhere if you don't understand why buying knockoff unlicensed furniture and design is theft. Glad to hear your ass aches
