Looking for references on how to determine a manufacturing date of my recent acquisition. I can't seem to find any obvious date on the tags. I think it is Rosewood shell which would (I think) place it no more recent than mid '80's. I tried calling Herman Miller but got no response.

I only know of a few ways to tell the approximate vintage. Perhaps there are people on the forum that have more detailed info.
- Look at the cushion attachment clips...if there are 2 round ones on each shell, it's from the late 50s or very early 60s. If there are 5 rectangular clips (3 on the backs), it's from the mid 60s to current production.
- Also check the logo on the bottom of the chair...if it's round, it's a 50's or early 60s chair. If it's rectangular, it's mid 60s to current.
- I have both a late 50s chair and a late 60s chair. The late 50s chair has finished panels on both sides. The 60s chair is only finished on the outsides of the chair, with the exception of the seat and ottoman. I also noticed that the veneer is thicker on the 50s chair than on the 60s chair. I guess HM was already cutting costs then.
- The cushions should be down if the chair is from the 50s or 60s, I think in the 70s they switched to part-down, part foam. Later on (80s?), they switched to all foam. The cushions in the later chairs don't have the same "pucker" that the earlier chairs have.

NICELY SAID FUNGUS MUNGUS ...
NICELY SAID FUNGUS MUNGUS THAT IS CORRECT...... THE CHAIRS MADE IN THE 70'S AND 80'S ARE THE BEST MADE BY HERMAN MILLER .... THE ROSEWOOD WAS GREAT ON THOSE CHAIRS. AND FOR SOME REASON LIKE A LEXUS WE DO NOT SEE THAT MANY IN OUR SHOP. MOST OF THE ONES I GET ARE FROM THE LATE 1950'S IN REALLY BAD SHAPE OR THE 60'S NEEDING A COMPLETE REDO ON THE LEATHER CAUSE IT IS SHOT.
