I hate to ask this but where is the best buy on an LCW lounge in walnut? They don't seem to turn up on eBay very often and usually at some exhorbitant "collectable" price. A new one from DWR is $629 with shipping. I want one to acutally use a lot. I need a stiff loungy height chair for my study next to all the garden reference books that I use. I want something I can wipe off as this is where I sit to read garden and "how-to" books and I'm usually doing the actual gardening at the time. I thought this chair would be a good looking solution. I can't have anything upholstered as I WILL sit in this with dirty clothes, I garden a lot. This is not a chair where I read Oprahs' latest book club selection (being facetious). Can't find a used one anywhere? How about (shudder) knock-offs?

LCW's
I've sat in two different reproduction LCW's and they were uncomfortable a hell. The Herman Miller is a chair I can sit in for long periods of time with no pain or butt numbness, bu I wouldn't use it for your purpose. Ever think of a newer Eames rocker, it's comfortable, easy to clean plastic, it's cheaper, and it looks great. Also, I don't think the LCW price at DWR includes shipping. Try my link, no tax, free, shipping, and you get the items in less than a week.

repo
Don't buy a repo LWC that is on my list of chairs that I tell me people to avoid ... for some reason only Herman Miller got that one down perfect and I think it is what James said is confortable in the Butt area everyones else's chair looks good but just not feel that good.. LWC was chosen by Time magazine as the Chair of the century and there is a reason for that it is really a a confortable solid chair, as well as a true icon I ordered one 22 days ago direct from Herman Miller in the new Yellow color and it should be here on the 20th ..There is a up choice for the new colors in the Analine dye. It now comes in Yellow,White, Teal Blue, soon to be out in Purple, orange, green, and of course Red,and Black , and the natural wood colors The chair speaks for it self as a true Icon , Also I have lots of rockers we recover them and put the rockers on to be honest that chair sits to low and I
think it is a cool looking chair but that chair does not do it for me as very comfortable,

LCW
I like the HM ones I've sat in, it's not like a lounge chair more like a school/study hall chair but a really comfortable one. So you've reinforced my choice but where the heck do you find a used one for a fair used price. Brand new HM is $629 w/ shipping but there's a used one on ebay they want $1000 for! What's up with that? If they are 629 new shouldn't you be able to find a used one in OK shape for a lot less?

new or vintage
The difference with the prices is most likely because of the year that they were produced. The LCW was produced from 1945-1957. They were re-issued in 1994. So - in all likelihood the one on ebay is pushing 50 years old.
Heres my take on the LCW: I love it. But I want (and have) a new production because I want to SIT it in. The vintage ones are beautiful, but probably substantially more fragile than a new production. The age of the glue on the backrest puts them at a risk of the back popping off, which would only traumatize you even more than the sticker price.
I hemmed and hawed about getting my LCW because it was a lot of money (550 then) and I was right out of college. But it's still in great condition. I sit in it regularly, and I never think about the price. And the longer you wait, the more the price is going to go up. Mine was 550 2 years ago, and now the price is up to 630.

what is the story on LCW
I have only sat in a LCW twice ,
When i put the order in last month and that was at the Herman miller showroom I was impressed what a big Ass chair it was for seat comfort !!!!! although holding its natural design beauty for looks, I have all kinds of chairs but there is something that intrigues me about that chair .. and i don't really no what it is , When i read that Time magazine named it the chair of the century , I really did not think much about it at the time, but
every time i view it I get excited about that chair in a different way. I guess I have read so much about the way the Eames were bending plywood in there Richard Neutra apartment complex that makes me think of them and them working on that chair, like i said i have around 60 design originals from the last 50 years and none of them effect me that way .
Question How come Herman Miller waited till 1994 to reintroduce that chair? what year did it go out of original production? and yes I would have heart failure if i had one from the early 50's and the back fell off, I have heard one horror story have another with the glue drying and people drilling holes in them to try to fix the chair, does its brother the DCW not get the recognition and applause as the LCW?

I find the glue thing really ...
I find the glue thing really interesting, its awful the way some manufacturers skimp on the glue, they actually mix things like rice flour into the glue to compensate for poor moulds and save money.

My two cents...
Hello! I figured I'd put in my two cents. I purchased a vintage LCW about a year ago and absolutely love the way it looks. However, as mentioned above, the glue on the older ones is lacking. Where the back support bends, the plywood layers try to separate when you lean back. I only use it as a "look but don't sit" type chair. If I were you I would go with the rocker. I was able to find one at a garage sale and it's so comfortable! Now if only I could find an armshell to replace the armless one that is on it!

Sorry James, I have no...
Sorry James, I have no suggestions of where to get a good price, other than checking ebay and craigslist often...
I think you should stick to your own idea and get the LCW and not the rocker. The rockers are great for lounging and rocking about, but not really for enjoying a book...

LCM Lounge Chair Metal
James, if cost is an issue, have you considered the metal-legged version of the LCW...the LCM?
While i do think it's not quite as sculptural as the LCW, the LCM has the same seat and back proportions; so i think that it's just as comfortable.
And $230 LESS.

p.s.– remember that you'll also get a brand-new product with a warranty; as opposed to a structurally-worn second-hand piece, sans guarantee.
Good luck.
