NO
Never change the form, fit and function of a design without the designer's consent.
And where does the idea come from that it must fit everyone? The back is too low for me personally but I don't expect it to be adjusted for my personal preferences, I just find another chair.
Coming from Vitra, this is especially surprising and disappointing. Profit should follow from good design. This is just for profit.

Why is this surprising to everyone coming from Vitra? Not knocking them, but they have changed several things in the past ... fiberglass to plastic shell chairs, the weird wide legged eiffel bases, the aluminum group style base on the lounge chair, the plastic panton chair ... not surprising at all IME.

I wonder who would spend +7.000 euro on this chair knowing it's worth less than half after you leave the store.

Bertoia shell chair
Came accross this Bertoia shell chair. I had no idea the wire chairs came with a plastic shell as well.

Yes
They were made for a few years in the 1960s (most likely to try to compete with the Eames shell chairs). Fiberglass reinforced plastic, btw.

It's funny. Several times a year someone posts about the fiberglass Bertoia chairs in shock.

Bigger Eames Lounge
Well the search function on this forum isn't all that great so it's hard to keep track.
It's astonishing to read all the positive feedback on the Vitra Facebook post. It would be great if we could get a counter movement going. I did my part yesterday. This thing should be burned on sight.

Search
If you're not happy with the simple built-in search, it's easy to use Google ( http://www.google.com); they do a very good job of indexing the DesignAddict forums. Here's an example:

Larger chair is for tall people, not fat people
If you're over 5'10" the original Eames chair provides no head support at all. The "headrest" is an upper back rest. This leaves you reclining back while straining your neck to hold your head up. I went to purchase one this weekend, and I'm very dissapointed that it doesn't come up to my shoulders. Truly good design shoudln't sacrifice utility, so I'm all for scaling classic designs for the taller people of today.
That said, I'm not paying 7,000 for one. Unfortunately, the regular height Eames chair is useless for me (6'3"). Here's hoping somebody modifies classic designs so that taller people can enjoy them.

I just think we should do away with tall people.

Gee thanks, whitespike
I think it's you useless midgets we should ditch! 😉
I found this thread amusing, Larger and taller was automatically assumed to be fatter and American. So prejudiced!

I was kidding! I am the midget in my family. All of my uncles and grandfathers were 6" and above. My dad is 6"5. I am the only one under 6" at 5"10! Just made it as far as enjoying the Eames lounge. Watching my dad, I feel for you tall people ... especially those who don't use it to any advantage. At least my dad was a basketball player and a stellar boxer ... it gave him a good reach. But I've seen him suffer finding clothes, cars and the like.
