Don't know if this question has been posted before (I couldn't find it in the archives) but does anyone know the difference between the white and black HM medallions tags on the earlier Eames 670/ 671 (pre 1971) models? Is one earlier than the other or did Herman Miller simply use both at the same time? There is a lot of info on the web, but nothing definitive to indicate whether or not one was used earlier than the other.

Eames Medallion
Great question. There were two variations of the black medallion, however, both were used in the mid-late 60's up until 71' ish. The white medallion was used earlier, from 1956 until the early 60's. Generally speaking, you can be clued in to the chairs age based upon a few things. If you have three screws under each armrest, you can assume that your chair was made before 59'. If you have the boot glides on your ottoman, rather than the screw-in domes of silence, you can assume that your chair was made somewhere between 1956 and 1957. Please update me on the details of your own, if you'd like and I can hopefully help to provide further details.

Thanks
for the reply. That does help out. Mine is a 2nd generation without the boot guides and only two screws under the arm rests. The labels and medallion are long gone, but I can always find a replacement on "the Bay". The only identifying marks are the three digit numbers stamped on the inside of each shell (so they wouldn't get mixed up on the floor). The numbers are: 252. I don't know if you can tell by those numbers what year it was manufactured. Let me know.

Unfortunately, the stamped numbers don't say anything about production dates. They were written by the manufacturer to identify which pieces to be used on the same chair/ottoman.

Gotcha
I kind of figured, but thought maybe the lower numbers indicated an earlier production piece. So that leaves an 11 year gap between 1960-1971. I guess I'll just attach a white medallion and call it a day. Thanks for all the help.
