Dear design addicts,I've got this 20 year old Barcelona Chair, which I like very much. Does anybody know if it is an authorized version? I don't see any name or labels on/in it. Can anybody advise some treatment-creame/paint to restore the leather piping on the seat and the cracks on the straps.Would you advise to turn over/flip the straps, so that the light-brown cracks are not visible anymore? Or is that mal-threatment of this chair...? Looking forward to your feedback 🙂

Probably alivar or steelform, looks like a higher quality repro but hard to tell. Steelforms come in 5 part frames and are chrome plated, alivars are I think single piece and plated too but that may have changed to stainless. Who makes them and who is a reseller is byzantine though.
I'd try black shoe polish and dubbin. Just make sure you've buffed off the excess black first. I think when leather cracks like that its more that its the surface coating cracking, I'm not sure how repairable that is.
Don't use anything oil or solvent based. There are leather dyes available, but I'd try artist's acrylics thinned with water and sparingly applied with a very small artist's brush. Experiment for color and consistency by testing on small areas of the underside. When dry, rub with a white cotton rag to test whether it will transfer onto clothing. If that all seems to work, apply a quality leather conditioner like Lexol according to directions and buff thoroughly with a horsehair brush as a final finish.
I actually did this to the cushions on my Eames lounge years ago with pretty good results. The goal is to color the exposed areas rather than to leave an actual film, but it is a cosmetic treatment only. Once the matrix of underlying fibers begin to break down, I don't think there's much that can be done to stop the process.
Best of luck. Good chair no matter the maker.
Thanks all for your input!!! This forum works very effectively 🙂
I am starting to get really curious wether the chair is original!
I cannot find any letters on the chair, except from the zipper, which says 'rapid'
I've made some extra pictures.
Some dimensions:
- Thickness frame-profile; 12mm X 32mm
- Max height frame: 745mm
- Width frame; 749mm
- Max distance front-leg to back-leg: 755mm
- Frame seat-height: 350mm
- Width of straps: 3X37mm
Tomorow I will search the shop for Lexol and acrylics.

I know very little about Barcelona chairs, however one of the OP's original photos shows a distinctive pattern for the underside fabric of the seat cushion. Wouldn't that be a good reference check to a confirmed vintage Knoll cushion, or did good vintage replicas even go so far as to match the hidden fabrics.
I would agree that the chair appears to be legit. All the details are typical of original Knoll productions ie: the fabric under the seat cushion, the bolts that fasten the strapping to the frame, the piping and seamlessness of the cushions, the angle of the back of the seat cushion that contours to the frame, the type and density of the foam, the seamlessness and lack of magnetism on the frame. At least all of these details match my Barcelona chair, which is a later stamped production. Nice chair!
