This story blows my mind. I have no memory of hearing about it, back in 1995; but I don't suppose MOMA was inclined to issue a press release, under the circumstances.

This Forbes story is the only confirmation I can find that it actually happened:

I take that back--
I've found additional confirmation that this occurred, from another reliable source.

Wow-just amazing that he had the balls
To pull this off in the midst of the museum. I took a picture of Picasso's 3 musicians and felt guilty!

I'm guessing that Marcel would approve
of the gesture.

In the movie version
The guy turns the thing upside down, straddles it, and unicycles his way down the escalator, out the door and up the street. To the accompaniment of Maple Leaf Rag.

That's surprising, Geo--
I would have guessed the movie to feature a Lalo Schifrin musical score.

As Duchamp's original
did not include bicycle pedals, "unicycling" would have been quite difficult ?

pedals
Oh, SDR. Don't be so literal.
🙂
The movie in my head is a slapstick comedy. The Duchampcycle is powered by willing suspension of disbelief.

Reminds me
Reminds me of the first attempt to steal Munch's the Scream...the villains slipped off the icy ladder and nearly killed themselves in the process.
And the second theft of the Scream where they just walked in, took it off the wall, and ran to the car...on camera.
