Hello all,
I just bought two Greige Zenith DAX's in beautiful condition. They are both on zinc plated X-bases and have the early 'Domes of Silence' glides.
The glides look to be all original and they're in amazing condition for their age. I have never seen examples in such perfect condition and first I though they must have been replaced at some point, but then I noticed that the metal do have small oxidized spots and that the rubber is somewhat dry.
I intend to use the chairs on an everyday basis and don't want to worry about ruining the early glides, should I ever decide to sell the chairs. Does anyone have any experience of removing the original glides off and replacing them with the boot type glides? Can it be done without ruining them?
Domes of Silence ...
ah, -now I get it!
When Whitespike added to Barry's first words, I still didn't get it... I just wondered if I'd missed something essential and it started to freak me out... -Now, I'm back on track!
Ok, maybe I should just leave the glides on then... I read on Eamesoffice that the reason they were replaced with the boot glides by Herman Miller in the early 1950's, was that 'the Domes of Silence had a tendency to snap off, or fall off'. That's why I was a bit worried about destroying them myself. Especially since I've got a nice pair with all 8 glides intact...
Thanks all!
Sound(s) of Silence
Sorry for going off topic, but I made the same association as Barry when I first read the thread title. I thought it was a S&G reference. Here is a live recording of the song:
