What Damien Hirst is accomplishing at Sotheby's may, in the end, turn out to be the new model of selling at the high end of desireables. Outside of the this and that and here and there the design area hasn't been able to resemble this level of chuzpah and not even close to the results.

The machinery and industry interdependency around DH notwithstanding, what is the problem with the design area? Why is it still the illegitimate downs cousin of art?

And is all this cash spent on contemporary art diminishing the capacity or interest around collectors taking design seriously enough to participate in a similar outing in the design sector? Are all the best minds of our generation focused on comtemporary art?

Is a wonderful nakashima table just a snorting pug dog to these people, or is design just too distilled at this point to be so properly packaged?

Certainly you folks know, yes?

Don't use the word ART and...
Don't use the word ART and Hirst in the same sentence. His work is SHIT and championed by SATAN himself CS. If you want REAL ART then look to people who have REAL TALLENT, Gormley (and Banksy) for example. I'm sure DH is laughing all the way to the BANK with suckers cash!
My apologies for the RANT, I do agree with what you're saying...

Amusingly Enough
'laughing all the way to the BANK with suckers cash!'
sounds like a Banksy piece.
I think art over the last ten years or so has become a commodity like any other - the big money is investing in it, and setting the astronomical prices we are seeing.
If someone pays, say, Two million pounds for a work, it becomes 'worth' that..

Further
to your original question...
Art is usually a one off-piece made by the artist, seldom is this the case in Design..
This is what makes art art, and Design design, surely ?
An original van der Rohe Barcelona chair, for example, would make a huge amount at auction.. how many were there in the Pavilion.. 3 ?
Design, by its very nature is mass-produced, so is therefore less highly valued than art

Art can be used as income...
Art can be used as income generators. Not sure of specifics, but I believe whomever owns a particular piece owns the rights to market it. Reproducing the image in various formats...like framed copies, greeting cards, calendars, neck ties, toy dog sweaters etc... generates profit. Who cares if it's "good art", will it make me money??? Something to consider when analyzing art prices. Like all investments...theres risk involed

Art
has shown itself to be the most sound investment area of the last 10 years.
Where would you put your money ..property..shares.. ???
I know where I'd put mine (if I had that sort of money)
