There must be many designers who much like other artists only get one or two shots at doing something great, only to have their dreams foiled and fading into obscurity, then doing something else. Do you know of any designers who have created a few objects and then went away, perhaps being discovered and hailed many years later?

I can't really think of any. Can you?

I came up with three from Finland
Pekka Perjo and his Pohjola chair - http://www.deconet.com/decopedia/object/148995/Pohjola_easy_chair_by_Pek...
Anna-Maja Salo and her Opinio table light - http://www.finnishdesignshop.com/lighting-table-lamps-opinio-480-table-l...
Ahti Kotikoski and his Anatomia chair - http://www.architonic.com/dcsht/anatomia-chair-quittenbaum/4101066
All of them work as interior designers or architects now.

Good subject.
The problem is, if they were one-hit-wonders, their names probably aren't remembered for posterity...

That might be it
Thanks for the link and I think that you're right concerning Resell. I'm writing a blog post on the matter and trying to come up with designers who for one reason or the other only created one or two products and them moved on. Some do of course become famous later on when their early creations are finally appreciated.
I'm also interested in designers who were active in one field such as glass or ceramics and then made something completely different like a chair, only to never do a piece of furniture again.

Does Harry Bertoia count?
He just did the one set of chairs for Knoll, then went back to sculpture.

How about Sol Bloom? Other than the Catch it All (which is fairly iconic) and scoop chair I can't think of anything else.

These are all great examples
Thanks for your insights. I got the chess set many years ago and I always wondered what else he/they did. I'll dig some more.

Bertoia Jumped
Bertoia jumped to my mind first too.
Possibly Hugh Acton? All I can remember him for is his bench. (although he did some shelving units too)
Norman Cherner - the side chair and arm chair are basically the same thing.
What's-her-head who designed the Eye Clock for Nelson Associates.
And if personal opinion is in play I think the Ghost chair is the only success Starck has had 😉 Does that count?

I actually went to the same school as this guy. He made the stingray chair and a few lamps, and I believe that is it.

@Rune
Did Tomas Pedersen bully you in school or something?
I googled his name+designer-Stingray and got more than 40000 hits. It seems he just did a new armchair called 'Concord' for Stouby.
It seems a little mean to put currently active designers on this list. Many designers produce good products over many years, without achieving instant fame and stardom.
That said, I personally don't like the Stingray rocker, hit design or not...
