I received an item on eBay today. A knoll platner 42" table. Well, there is a reason why a $1900 table was "like new" for $1000 shipped. They included a piece of junk 26" piece of glass and no 42" piece.
I have been offered to keep the Knoll base (which appears to be genuine and came in the original box etc) for $500 and then I can get my own piece of glass.
Knoll's 42" glass is $1061. Do I really need the Knoll glass? Should I just return the base and junk glass and get my money back?
Or should I try and find another piece of glass that is just as good as Knoll without the price tag. I'm not sure what the difference would be!
No Knoll glass required
judson,
No you do not "need" to use Knoll glass. A few years ago I purchased a new MR table from a Knoll dealer that was missing the original glass top. I got the exact dimensions of the glass from Knoll and my local dealer cut the glass for a reduced price. While it was not the Knoll pricing it was not inexpensive. I was also careful to have a vendor who has a CNC controled cutter for a precise fit (this was the most important part). Quality will always cost money.
how thick did you go? I was...
how thick did you go? I was thinking it might be cool to get a custom thickness. I'm not 100% sure on the size. Is the base the same for 36" and 42"? I have a TINY place and think the 42" might be overkill.
Then again, 42" might just look really nice. Hard to know since I haven't seen a 42" piece of glass in here
Which table are you talking about?
The coffee table or dining table? I was confused, but then you mentioned a 36" glass top which is not an option for the dining table, so am I correct in assuming you bought a coffee table?
Regardless of the size you choose, (and I think the 42" size is a proportion that is more flattering on the coffee table if you have the space) there is nothing magical about the glass that Knoll puts on their tables. You can easily get a new top made, and I tend to agree that thicker glass is a bit nicer. I always feel like the thiner glass on the coffee tables does not look or feel as substantial as I'd like, though Knoll has always used the same thickness on them.
