A brief look at how the Djinn chair is made and no doubt much Paulin too.

Its amazing how these fabrics like 'tonus' can stretch into place, they never seem that strechy when you buy them.

I used to work in a library that had these in burnt orange in the break/lounge room. I think most folks thought they looked very dated. I think it was the orange, to be honest, rather than the chair itself.

A nice essay on the structure.
The guts of a project are always fascinating.
Deterioration hurts, but reality...

I like them, much as I dislike poly-foam, probabaly just becuase they had such a starring role in 2001.
I'm not too sure about the backrest, I had allways assumed they were a seperate piece that emerged from the underside and bent upwards, I am upholstering some plywood shells right now of similar shape but am using thick felt carpet underlay instead of foam, its er challenging! But it does staple into place quite firmly with no glue or toxicity at all.
There is an egg chair restoration diary online somewhere too, will try and find it again, as you say its great to see the guts othwerwise its just surface lust. By the looks of it the entire frame must have been sprayed with contact adhesive, yikes!
PS, a good trick I've just discovered when upholstering with the felt, it can get a bit lumpy on tight corners and can telegraph through the fabric BUT a really stiff wire brush rubbed into the corner smooths it out.
