with chinese knockoffs!! I have seen the Eames, Nelson and even Wegner knockoffs but I have never seen this one!!
A Finn Juhl model 133 spade chair on ebay!
The horrible thing is that it costs almost $900!! and will probably fall apart in 6 months!!
Disgusted!! Anyone else??

I wasn't aware of the Ikea chair! Does it look similar to the 133?
Im pretty sure the chair is Chinese. The seller's store is almost all cheap Chinese stuff!
I understand why people purchase these items...cost and some look pretty darn close to the original...But when does it stop?? My family has a small machine and metal fabrication shop and we have lost business and have been forced to lay off hard working employees due to cheaper inferior chinese materials and manufacturing!
Just joking...
The chair just looks like something Ikea would forward with the light frame and basic black pad.
I understand full well people's reasons for purchasing these knockoffs. But I don't understand how they can't get their heads round the ramifications of doing so. It's not just the principle of the design and the designer. There's questions of morale. Working conditions, economic and environmental issues, etc...
There's plenty of vintage design to choose from out there. It's already here. If you can't afford a particular design, there's surely another you'll fancy to be had in your price range.
The Chinese Myth...
There was a time when Chinese products were dramatically poorer than their western counterparts, but those days are long gone. When it comes to electronics for example, specifically audiophile hardware, not only do they build equipment that is just as refined as German or American made at a fraction of the price, but they often progess the original designs with their own creativity and innovations.
Same goes for these furniture knockoffs. Ive seen some pretty good Herman Miller copies that could go toe to toe with the real thing.
From the
point of the workers -- if that's what you're interested in -- isn't a job making something -- anything -- better than no job ?
I know it's crap -- maybe -- but the Western world led the way in consumerism, and now it's the way of the world, for better or worse.
So, what's your solution ? Everybody buy the real thing, new or old -- and the rest of the world can just sit there and starve ?
Reality is what it is.
I'm not so sure, SDR...
There's a fine line between humanism and sadism I guess. But if you're asking me whether I think the jobs provided by Chinese discount companies are a positive for the regular Chinese worker, I think it's well documented that may not be the case. Poor pay(poverty level) plus hazardous or at the very least strenuous working conditions in most cases doesn't equal a good alternative to starvation if you ask me. I'd be one of those flinging myself from the nearest highrise.
Add to this the fact that many of these workers were once farmers who were self sufficient and are now being forced from their land and work with little choice but working for pennies by government mandate.
Reality is not for the light of heart apparently.
This one kind of hurts: http://www.abestfurniture.com/product.asp?id=1952&class=548-553-703
Regardless of where you stand on reproductions, there is something to be said for stealing intellectual property which I think would include the photos that they are using to sell their knock-offs.
Something about taking a photo from the Finn Juhl house and writing your name across it as if it's yours really galls me. You can see where they stole all their photos here: http://www.onecollection.com/ChieftainsChair-TrayTable/
If you did not know that they lifted those pictures, you might assume that the chair they are selling actually looks that good. Myself, I'd be very surprised if they could copy the work of master woodworkers that well and sell it that inexpensively.

You must be joking
virtueaudio,
Chinese manufacturing borders on "trailer trash" and their audio equipment is pure junk. Innovation to them is considered "de-engineering" a product. I have not noticed their names at the top of the Nobel Prize winners.
The moral problems of China are best left to the people of the state and the law is universal.
This is just
WRONG!!! Complete FAIL!

Im pretty sure this is not a progression of the original design.
