Metaphor
Mark is the queen of this forum. (He could rightly assume the title any time he wishes; it is only an expression of his great humility that he titles himself aunt)
And in this queen-dom we have a variety of other nobles, woodsmen, merchants, sages, and one Italian court jester, DiFrutta, who manifests in objects, not people.
We have a paparazzo who shoots photos of our exalted queen on his balcony. (I think our paparazzo would find a great market for touring photos of our royalty (and his mother) about the queen-dom. Might I suggest a telephoto lens to capture long range shots).
And we have an endless stream of peasants who bring their furniture to court for identification and who reward the assembled court with the occasional entertainment while they are here.
And now we have another puritan who is telling us that we should find less entertainment in our work. But this religous scold is just a tyrannical pretender to our true queen's throne.
And the scold will fail because as soon as we stop taking enjoyment in our work, the play stops, the stage disappears, and all the peasants come to an empty theater with no answers.

Well
played, Sir! If Mark gets to be Queen, I wanna be the Duchess of Savoie. I'll even change my username.
The whole metaphor was great, Leif. You forgot to mention the wicked coven of witches lead by Marie the Maleficent.

focksee
Your repeated moaning about the layout of the forum is disrespectful and far more boring than any moaning about Mark. If it's such an issue you could go glean elsewhere you know. We long timers will still be here.

Dear Mark
From an "almost" elderly female living in the heart of redneck country....I adore your posts and have never read one single word that in any way offended me. I look forward to your snappies and stories and miss them terribly when you go too long without posting, as you have recently. The thought of you being banished to some remote part of the kingdom is very distressing, but if you are, I will follow. The idea of more photos of you in your delightful city is an excellent one and I hope you follow up on it.

Yes, lovely leif erickson.
Do i see deleting posts from the angry sisterhood?
I suppose the shoe did not fit.
Complaining is so unsavory.
We call that in NY the 'fun bunch'.
I would really like someone to please show me a forum or website that is 'fun bunch' approved or whatever is so wrong with 'here'. What is so off with this format? Why complain and not offer some solution and a real example of what is right. An offensive 'like' button? Some bouncy cartoons?. Alter ego avatars ?, (ew) Lets put the pantone color of the year on the header, (please no)
Nice to see you back Mark.

Or
an alternate view is that Lunchbox has the ability to be appreciative of something that is both useful and free. The adage " Never look a gift horse in the mouth" comes to mind here.

I'd liken your moaning to a bum complaining about the chowder at the local soup kitchen. Catch my drift?

In defence of foxxxy
I think the current back and forth with foxxy will achieve nothing. While i appreciate this place and its content it has its limitations....i do not want to upset P&A in any way or diminish their generosity but we all know that valuable info has been allowed to slip away unnoticed only to be retrieved by those aware of the threads. I hope when the new forum comes that we can in some way sticky important threads or put them in their own hall of fame type section.

I do more lurking than actual...
I do more lurking than actual posting, but what keeps me coming back is the unique and quirky personalities of the "regulars". What I love about Mark's posts is that he always comes in when threads tend to get a bit too serious - a distraction to show us how silly we're being. That said, he's also very knowledgable about furniture, and has helped me out numerous times and is a great asset to the forum.

I agree, Killian.
Nothing is perfect. Our gracious hosts have allowed that changes are forthcoming and that they welcome feedback. There's nothing wrong with constructive criticism or suggestions offered in spirit of support.

The only thing that really bothers me
on this forum is when I'm searching for a discussion about something or other, the search turns up individual message titles, not the thread title. It's pretty much impossible to figure out from a message title if that particular message is in the thread that I'm looking for and I end up clicking on each search result until I finally find the thread.
I'm not sure how it could be done differently and it really doesn't interfere with my participation or enjoyment here but it's just the one thing that doesn't quite work for me.

I can second that.
Once editing was enabled, that matter (of the search function) rose on my wish list. I can sometimes get to where I want to go, but it's a struggle . . .
That said, there isn't any other discussion forum like this one, as far as I know. And it has survived previous periods of inappropriate posting by trolls -- some of whom were quite persistent. As I recall it, my first post was dismissed by someone -- who I had no way of knowing, at that moment, was a bad actor. And I was brand new on the Internet !
But I didn't go away. I've had my own periods of pique, I confess; this form of communication seems, as an unfortunate side-effect, to permit or even encourage "speech" which wouldn't be acceptable in face-to-face chat. It really does demand a degree of self-discipline . . .
A good part of our space has been devoted, in the last couple of years, to serving the collecting public, as a go-to place for identification and assessment of potential furnishing purchases. I would never seek to limit that function of the site (well, not too loudly, anyway) -- but it remains for those of us who have broader interests around design and design artifacts to keep a plentiful flow of conversation alive on the forum.
