Hello all,
I just received a Paul Frankl cork dining table, which I absolutely love love love - the cork is so warm and multi-dimensional - warts and all.
It came with a hodge-podge set of Frankl chairs, all of which need help. Before I sink any money into refinishing/reupholstering/buying mates, I wanted to get some opinions from anyone who would care to share one.
Currently I have:
2 lattice-backed mahongany armchairs (matching the lattice legs) - surprisingly uncomfortable if you rest against the back. Also some bad glue jobss on the arms.
2 lattice-backed side chairs, also quite uncomfortable unless you are sitting properly upright, not touching the back at all. But these are very pretty and look good on around the table.
2 v-backed arm chairs, which seem the most comfortable of the six - I like the idea of getting four more armless ones, but is that too much upholstery cluttered around the pretty table?
So if I were to attempt to find a more cohesive set, any suggestions from the above?
Any other suggestions, Frankl or non-Frankl?
Thank you!
(P.S. I'm not thinking of the Saarinen office chair - just rolled it out so I could work in more comfort)
Hi Robert...
Now I'm not sure whether you're being sarcastic as well...? If so, I'll humor you by saying that the table is vintage JC Penney, circa 1992.
In actuality, it is Paul Frankl (for Johnson Furniture) cork veneer dining table with mahogany legs, circa 1950. It looks the same as the table in the bottom picture I posted in my string of ad infinitum responses to myself.
If the 1980s reference is to the very slick, bleached table in the photo of the six upholstered chairs, that is the same model table recently refinished and for sale in a shop in Palm Springs (not my table).
First of all,
it is not Monday morning where I live, it is Monday evening. Secondly, I don't know what "ETA" means.
Having said that, I would never put either the plunging neckline chairs nor the zig-zag chairs with the zig-zag table because, in the first instance it is beyond chaotic, and, in the second case, it is too matchy-matchy.
The top of the table is cool, though.
.
Love that table. I remember it when you purchased it and good that
you are enjoying it with its patina.
I did see this post this morning. I just don't know. Would better
upholstery work? Something deep and dark, a burnt orange?
The split back is just odd. And the others that look rather nice
with the table are not comfortable...
No
I wasn't being sarcastic, it was a genuine question!
(the cork in the refinished table looked a bit like the bird's eye maple that was so popular in the 80s- notthat I have anything against 80s furniture)
I don't like the cloven hoof backed chairs, the strutted ones I like, they put me in mind of the Tecta chairs by Eric Lyons
Thanks..
..for your opinions. It's good to hear outside the box design opinions because a) I'm still new at this and b)I have never seen this table paired with anything but the V-backed or lattice backed chairs.
These chairs came with the table and are in poor shape, requiring a significant reupholstery investment if I keep them - so yes, definitely a color change from the white would be in order.
However, I'm open to entirely different chair options- Wegner's wishbone? Or another type of simple Danish wood chair perhaps?
Rockland - yes, I'm definitely loving the patina - the "bruise" I was worried about in photos is barely noticeable unless there is a direct glare on it. I may have to take the much darker leaves to the tanning salon for some doses of UV light, however...
good point
about the width. Even the side chairs that came with the table are surprisingly wide and feel crowded.
I might have just given myself a lengthy search project..
Edited to Add ("ETA" - to avoid multiple posts that irk some people):
Thoughts on the following chairs?
#1 = Glenn of CA cane backed chairs - maybe too bulky/blocky also though?
#2 = Dunbar - also cane backed, but also blocky looking?
#3 = McCobb leather/mahogany chairs (trying to think outside the box...)
#4 = link to Wegner "the chair" cane (though perhaps also too wide, like the Wishbone)?
