I had the day off so I went consignment shopping. I drove a little north of where I live to an untold location...don't want to give up my good gettin' spots. I walked around and found not much that caught the eye, until I walked into the back room. In the far corner I see something interesting. As I get closer my heart starts to pump. It's an Eames, with ottoman! I go to check the price tag thinking $$$$, but what do my eyes behold? $99!!!!!!!! My hands tremble as I take the tag up and tell the little old lady I want it. She says, "nice looking leather chair". "Yeah, real nice", I say. I'm not sure how to figure if it's real, but I don't want to lose it so I buy it. No tags on the underside, but there is a staple near the base that looks to be where a tag was.
The leather is in good shape, a bit worn...no tears. The ottoman shows more wear. The main thing is the wood is beautiful and it seems solid!
Anyone out there know if this is real?
not vintage
It's not one of the vintage chairs, for sure. The older bases weren't chrome, and the chairs didn't have visible bolts (unless, like mine, it was repaired by a doofus). I admit I'm not an expert, though, so maybe someone else can tell you if it's a newer incarnation or just a knockoff. Either way, $99 isn't bad.
All one
has to do is Google "Eames lounger" and look at a couple of pages of "images" to identify the features that make this chair different from the real thing: form of base and presence of "rivets" on the outside of the shell.

I don't have a smart phone, so when I was at the consignment I had to make a quick decision on whether to buy it. I would've looked it up on the spot if I did, but I still would've bought it if I knew it wasn't an Eames. I haven't come across one of these chairs before in person, so it's a rare enough find for me. It may not be an Eames, but it's still a super cool chair that's well worth $99. My ass is going to enjoy it!
I may even think about some new leather down the road.
Where the wear is worst on...
Where the wear is worst on the ottoman it looks to be hide underneath, but it could also be tan fabric. The chair has no wear through areas for me to see. The arm rests don't feel leathery to me though.
I've been sitting in it for a while already and damn is it comfortable. I could feel a nap coming on at one point.
The one issue is it sort of leans to the right side. When I look at the spring mechanism underneath it appears to look uneven. How tight should the screw tensioner be underneath? Would this affect how the chair sits side to side?
Spring
Tightening only affects the ability to recline. I think the leaning to one side or the other has to do with the side the prior owner favored. There is likely a slight bend of the entire mechanism to that side. If you sit on the floor beside the chair and spin the chair you can usually find a position in which the chair will sit pretty level.
