Should designers be well dressed in order to be taken seriously ?
Many times, in my professional life, I've heard people say 'if he can't dress him/herself, how can I expect them to make me a perfectly designed space/building/ environment/product..or whatever'..or words to that effect..
If architects /designers are interested in design..should they not portray that in the way they look ?
should it be & is it a cross reference thing
If the guy/ girl has a nice portfolio & great projects, he/ she can show up in pyjama bottoms as far as I am concerned. However, if a newbie comes along, I can understand people want to have some kind of indication that the kid has taste: so by lack of portfolio, increase in shirt importance ?
Apart from that, I think that people who are interested in architecture/ design / fashion are often interested in (at least some of) the other fields too. As all those fields have something in common: attention to form, proportion, color & texture combination etc.
if you need to
be dressed some particular way in order to be taken serious then that says a lot about your work and qualities as a designer... Personally when i see someone dressed in 'the way they should be' (for designers that would be -black-) automatically i get suspicious about his qualities. (there are some jobs where you need to be dressed in some way more as a respect to others eg coroners not like cops (to regain respect). I really believe that when you are dressed in that that makes you feel ok, your 'good-feelings' will drip down towards your work.
Why should anything beyond, neat clean and freshly showered matter?
Because human being respond to viusal cues that's why. gerrit. you are unusual in that you are suspicious of seeing what's expected. I'm like that too. If someone shows me what they think I want to see and I instantly want to know what their hiding! I think we expect designers to look uber-fashionable because they are presenting ideas/works that intended to make us feel as if we are as cool as they are. Bullsh*t but that's marketing for you. Me, I'll stick to my simple wardrobe of plain jerseys and black slacks and I don't give a hoot what anybody thinks...but then, I'm not a designer!
Sprockets
I dunno, black slacks and a jersey sounds pretty uber fashionable...
